Masked an Object with Subtract

Hey there,

I am currently trying my first content aware fill. I have successfully masked the objects and subtracted them. The only thing is, my images are black, whereas the guy in a tutorial video I am learning from has checkerboard masks. 

Would I need my masks to be checkerboard patterned as well?

What is a black subtracted mask vs a checkerboard subtracted mask?

It's a photo anyway, so I'll just see if photoshop is anymore logical.

It was not that much more logical, in fact to not have this option greyed out after lassoing, one must first go into Preferences and ensure that the checkbox for Content Fill Aware is even selected. Then, as Adobe seems to do, once you get that, it makes further confusion by causing the Color vs Object option to be somewhere frustrating too. Isn't technology supposed to be designed to simplify life...not to make it tricky so only a select bunch of people, who probably don't cherish time, are fearful they gon lose their jobs if others can use it with ease. Glad I trialed this, because I sure as hell wouldn't buy/rent this product in this day and age. It may have once been the industry standard, but now the industry has plenty of options. Adobe reminds me of past website design platforms, verses current ones.

Apparently by clicking on the deepest layers this buried render box shall be revealed.

This is simply an option in your viewer panel. This little button will toggle between the checkerboard or your background color of choice (which can be customized in the Composition Settings).
