I have done a few text boxes for a project that autoresize the bg plate after the number of letters used (and more...) But I like precompose the after effect files and add some animation to the plates. But motion graphic templates seams to not work when using precomps. Is this correct?

you will get "Property is unrelated" if you try to drag a property to the EGP that is not related to the comp selected in the EGP "Master" (child or parent comp).

make sure that the "Master" in the EGP specifies the parent comp or any related comp.

kinda.

if you have properties that you already linked in the EGP and you precomp the layer that has the properties - you will lose the properties in the EGP and would have to relink again. if you first precomp the layer, then link the properties from within the precomp to the EGP - it will work.

annoying isn't it? especially in you are unaware of this behavior and only find out after you precomp that you lose the properties and not even able to undo - already filed a bug report about that.

Thanks Roei. Crap this is exactly what happend. It was a couple a month ago I did the original motion graphic templates that I now wanted to update with some in and out animations. And the easiest way would be to put them in a precomp and just do a few different reveals of thoose precomps. Looks like I have to redo all again...

Sure, thanks for reminding me about it. With all these gotchas, one tends to forget the limitations of some of the tools there are in Ae. Be a sport and file a bug report, specificy why this damaged your workflow. this falls in the area between a bug and a feature. What do we want? More functionality to MGT! When do we want it? ASAP

Im using a layer to hide the precomp behind for the reveal. I like to have a slider for that layers y transformation. But after effect tells me this is not supported! or Property is unrelated to "The graphic precomp" and will not affect rendering.

The reason I like to be able to change the mask layers y axis is so that the reveal will be at the exakt place even if I skip a few lines

of text.

Thank you Roei, is should light this thread with green light! But I wanted to ask you one last thing. I have done template with a title and a separate text box with 6  line in it. Then I let the text box with the 6 lines control the rectangular shaplayer behind the text. Then I have an duplicated shapelier that is a little offset in y axis to cover up for the title text box. Sure this is a "hack" but im not so good at coding, and it works really we'll. But it the title is longer than the longest text in the 6 lines, then the shape layers will not cover it.

Im not sure what had been the proper way to do this? Can you do one textbox with 7 lines of text. Then in premiere let you change font for each line individually?

Cheers!

Joel
