new to after effects, layers separate but still moving each other

New Here ,

i'm brand new to after effects and today i drew up some things in illustrator to turn into video. i have separated everything individually but when i try and apply effects to one on it moves another.

in this case  i have 2 large triangle outlines filled with smaller triangles and rotating the smaller triangles caused my larger outlined ones to rotate as well. any answers or help would be appreciated

Hi! Welcome!

If you're just starting out It may be good to start here: Get to know After Effects |

So, from your description it' hard to discern what exactly is happening. My guess is that you have multiple triangles imported as footage, not as a layered comp OR if its a layered comp then you used compound paths. Check out a few tutorials on using comps and vector files in AE
