No 3D option for Cinema 4D file in After Effects

Hello,

I created a new Cinema 4D file from After Effects by going File->New-> Maxon Cinema 4D file...

Then I created an animated spline in C4D which I saved and it is then available in Ae.

Screen Shot 2022-10-08 at 12.33.18 AM.png

But there is no 3D toggle to turn the C4D layer into a 3D layer even though, in the C4D file, I created a spline in all of the x-y-z axes. The C4D layer also doesn't have any "thickness in the top or lef or right view i.e. the spline doesn't appear to be moving out of 2D space.

The idea was to mask out parts of a photo and have the spline animate around the layers but I can't get that to happen if I can't see the C4D layer as 3D.

Any help appreciated.

Thanks,

Ryan

This is just how it works. The Cineware renderer is just a window in another 3D universe separate from AE's own 3D. This is pretty much how any 3D-ish plug-in in Ae works, be that Element 3D, Trapcode or whatever you fancy. It's quite appropriately a "multiverse" (of madness *lol*). that being the case, you have to rethink your strategy and put in much more work than just growing a spline around your jogger lady. One way would apparently to do it entirely in C4D by mapping the cut out photo as a texture on a plane, another extensive masking and depth-based clipping by manipulating the C4D camera settings in AE and using multiple duplicate layers.

Thanks for the timeous reply.

I ended up doing it entirely in Ae with a CC Paricle World in a Pre-Comped layer with a Null linked to the x,y and z of the Particle Producer and then creating 6 masks with some kayframing on the Pre-Comped layer in the main Comp.  It worked quite well and I'm happy with the result.  Who needs real 3D anyway? Lol.

Check out the demo site here and let me know how slow the page load is.  I would really appreciate it.

Again, thanks for the reply. 🙂

Page loaded instantly for me.  The background disappears as I scroll, is that intentional?

Nice use of CC Particle World though.

You could have achieved the same result in C4D by importing your image into that program as a texture and applying it to a plane which you then position inside the spiral.

Great. Good to know it's responding quickly.

I am just experimenting with things such as opacity. I take it you don't like the opacity idea? Good feedback. Thanks.

im sure I could have done similar in C4D, it's just I don't know it well at all and I have a passing knowledge of Ae.
