Make sure to check the Composition Settings/3D Renderer in the third tab of Composition Settings (Ctrl/Cmnd + K). It must be set to Advanced 3D.

Welcome to the community, edwoodjr.

What are your system specifications (CPU, GPU, RAM, OS version)? Also, what's the exact version of After Effects you're using? After Effects version 24.2.1 supports the OBJ import. If you're using 24.1 older, please update.

If you're using the latest version, please check if it happens with all the OBJ files or a particular one. Feel free to DM me with the OBJ file to test.

Report back.

Note: Moving this thread from Bugs to Discussions for troubleshooting.

Thanks,

Nishu

I am running into this same error when trying to import an .obj into After Effects (that I just updated to the most recent version).

I checked the Comp Settings like Rick suggested and it is set to Advanced 3D. I was also able to import an alternate .obj file into the same project so the issue is with the initial .obj file I was trying to import.  The file I am trying to import I just exported by selecting the object and using File > Export Selected Object as.. > .obj. I thought it could be from the model being pieces connected by a Null in Cinema 4D so I tried using Connect Objects to make the model a singular object, but still ran into the same error.

Are there certain settings needed when exporting as an .obj to avoid this error? Getting stumped why one .obj is importing and the other isn't

Update: My Cinema 4D needed updating, and after updating to the most recent version I was able to select the object and use File > Export Selected Object as.. > obj. to create an .obj file that I was able to import into After Effects
