I have been working on a project for a while, but all of a sudden when I now open the project and try to carry on, once the playback reaches 25 seconds my dcreen freezes on that frame and stops working completly. I have moved all media around the area and purged cashe, and can not seem to fix the bug, even removed media that was around that time. please let me know if you have any idea on why this is happening? I am running it on a capable set up.

Thanks for your reply, I am relatively new to After effects, sorry for the lack of info/

these two screenshots show the frozen screen with two different points on the time line. The only way to change it is force quit the application. Do you need any other info?

Without any exact info on what's happening at that point in time and proper system information we can't tell you much. The footage could simply be damaged, the buffers of your GPU fill up, a specific sensitive effect kick in that crashes due to wrong settings. So much that could be going on here. You simply need to be more specific.

Every time you have problems with a composition, the very first thing you should do is start soloing layers and checking the modified properties of the layers. Check modified properties by selecting a layer and pressing 'uu' and look for things that can be turned off or reset. Solo layers to eliminate other layers from the problem. If you can't figure out what is causing the problem post a screenshot with the Composition or the source footage selected in the Project Panel so we can see what you are dealing with and the modified properties of the problem layer revealed. Tell us what you are trying to do, describe your workflow, and give us some system details and we can probably help you figure out what is going on in your comp.

Your screenshots don't tell us very much. Here is what I see from your screenshots:

  • You are probably running AE 2020 and scrubbing when you took the screenshots because the Composition Panel is displaying Adaptive Resolution
  • You have Adaptive Resolution as a Fast Preview option
  • The Magnification Ratio is 50% and the Comp Panel Resolution is set to Auto (which is good)
  •  Pixel Aspect Ratio correction is turned on so that makes me wonder about the Comp settings because non-square pixel comps are not the standard and have not been since we stopped shooting on videotape
  • Both screenshots do not show anything but one text layer (I think it is layer 1), some kind of white background (maybe layer 10) as a background for the text, and some kind of background image
  • Layer 3 - 9 are nested comps (pre-comps) but the CTI is not over any of them when the screenshots are taken so I don't know what they are supposed to do
  • Layer 10 (White Solid 1) is the only visible layer that has any effects applied
  • Some of the frames have been cached in the disk cache but very few frames are loaded into ram (blue and green lines in the timeline)
  • There are some layers in the composition that are significantly larger than the comp

Here's what I don't know from the screenshots:

  • What is supposed to be going on in the comp?
  • Are there any keyframes in the visible layers?
  • What are the comp settings?
  • Your system is a Mac but how much ram do you have and what is the OS version?
  • What are the preview settings (Preview Panel)?
  • Is there a specific reason you included screenshots while scrubbing so that Adaptive Resolution basically destroyed any ability to see what is really going on in the composition?
  • What kind of footage or images are used in the composition?

There could be something going on at 25 seconds in the nested comp on layer 6 even though layers 3 - 8 appear to be copies of the same composition. The work area is set to the full length of the comp and you are probably never going to get a full minute of ram preview even at half resolution. Have you tried setting the work area to seven or eight seconds? Have you tried running ram previews with only one of the layers turned on?

I would start by parking the CTI where the Preview stops and things hang up. Then I would start with Layer 1 and look for layers that are under the CTI at that time. I would solo the first layer you come to, then keep moving down the timeline soloing each layer that falls under the current-time indicator until the preview hangs up. When it hangs up select the problem layer and press the U key twice to reveal all modified properties and start resetting things or turning things off.
