Replacing Footage in After Effects

Community Beginner ,
Sep 07, 2025 Sep 07, 2025

Hello All, apologies if this has been covered but I can't seem to find an existing post with this specific issue. I have created a composition which includes png files that I move using the puppet pin tool. I then try to replace the png in the composition with a similar sized one but it is not taking in the project, and especially not taking the edits and effects on the original file such as puppet pin movement etc. Can this be achieved at all? Could it be done via scripting?

How are you replacing the files? Have you tried selecting the layer to be replaced in the timeline and Alt+F while dragging the new file from the project panel onto the layer to be replaced in the timeline?

Option-drag to replace the png in the timeline in OSX.
Be sure the files are the same dimensions.

Thank you for your advice! So I tried this method again with your advice of making sure the files were the exact same dimensions, it worked on the first 2 bits I replaced but now it's not working anymore...genuinely baffled!!

You could try clearing the media cache in case it is a preview glitch.

Let us know how it goes.

Thanks,
Nishu

thanks so much for your suggestion!! This is so weird, just like the previous suggestion I took your advice and it worked a couple of more times and now it's back to not doing it! I'm going to try again with a different composition for which I need to do the same thing and let you know how it goes!

Thanks again!
