Hi,
I'm doing a tutorial on vibrations in a string and standing waves. I've got a really good end result using three layers (original wave, reflected wave and standing wave) and wave warp, but what I am having trouble with is the start of the sequence. I'd like to start off with a straight horizontal line (ie. a string) with a sine wave entering from the left and travelling to the right along the straight line (ie. the wave moves up the string before being reflected and creating a standing wave) but I can't for the life of me work out how to do it.
Bit of a newbie to AE so if anyone has got any pointers that would be great.
Thanks,
Joe

brYou will want to use expressions to control this kind of stuff. It is going to take some study and some experimentation to get what you want. Dan Ebbert's Motionscript.com is your best resource for advanced expression training.
Look at these articles by my friend Dan:
Those articles will get you started on the theory and point you in the right direction. Get back to us after you have done some homework.

If you have a little money to spend you might want to look at some of these tools from AE Scripts. I don't have these but they look interesting:
There are probably more

Thanks Rick,
Wow - who would have thought such a simple thing would be so complex! Think I've got plenty of interesting homework to do there.
Appreciate the feedback and the speedy response.

ok this is kind of a tough one.
what I did was create a solid at the measurements of my sin wave say 400x400 pixels
added a stroke on transparent, and the wave warp with set to vertical edges
now created another straight line on a solid at the dimensions of my compositions like this.
now I need to subtract from that line, the area of the sin line so I duplicate my 100x400 solid and remove the effects and use it as my alpha invert matte for my line.
now all I need to do is move the matte of the full line along with the sin wave layer so I parent them both to a null and move the null.
here's the project: Sinwave.aep - Google Drive
it's good exercise. I wonder if others will suggest other ways to tackle this:

Thanks Roei,
That's an interesting solution, I'll try that thanks.
Thanks for sending me the file (just one thing, I'm still on CS6 (so AE 11.0.1.12) and can't open the file. Couldn't back save it for me could you?
Appreciate the feedback and the speedy response.
Cheers,
Joe

I'm still on CS6 (so AE 11.0.1.12)
you should update it to 11.0.4 which is the recent fixed update for CS6 that could save you trouble.
there you go, tell us how it worked out:

Thanks Roei,
I'll need to get my head round what you're doing there first.
Would love to upgrade but have to feed the baby first. 🙂
Cheers,
Joe

P.S. Just checked and hadn't realised there were still some CS6 updates pending. Currently downloading. Thanks for the tip. Isn't the forum a great place? 😉
