Smoke animation

coloured smoke

Hi,

I need to animate this coloured smoke as if it is coming out from an object (my logo) from bottom to top and change randomly in shape like it is real smoke. 

I don't know how to do that because I'm pretty new in After Effects and learnt basic usage from myself using video tutorials.

Not really anything you would do with AE. This stuff is best done in a 3D program using particle and fluid simulation, which is far from trivial to set up and understand. If that's not an option, you might want to check out e.g. the Fractal Noise based smoke tutorials on VideoCopilot.net for some ideas. Just be aware that due to AE's limitations in dealing with distortions and 3D layer interaction this could end up being quite a finnicky, hair-pulling experience and take lots of time.

Smoke like that is pretty difficult to do with the standard set of effects. You could get pretty close with Fractal Noise + Colorama + a gradient as a track matte + some displacement + maybe Bezier Warp, but it's not going to be very easy or look nearly as good as a 3D solution.

Trapcode Particular and a few other 3rd party effects would do the job inside AE. To use any of these techniques you need a firm foundation in the basics and the best place to start is the Learn AE section of the AE product page or the After Effects default Home Screen.

I didn't find any useful tutorial on VideoCopilot.net and tried with the solution suggested by Rick_Gerard but, as you both said, it was not so easy to reach my goal and the result is still not good.

As I don't know how to use any 3D program, I think I'll learn how to use Trapcode Particular plugin.
