I want a sphere with a Mercator map applied as a texture, and want to animate the texture unwrapping to become a plane, separate from the sphere. There used to be a UI pane script to do this called "Spheroid creator" but I can't find it anywhere. I'm using AE CS6.
Any suggestions gratefully received.

Spheroid Creator was part of the Trapcode Suite, as far as I remember, but it still didn't do what you seem to think it did. You'd still have to tile up the map manually in pre-comps and substitute the solids the script created with them. that being the case, you likely have better luck simply licensing BorisFX Layer Deformer plug-in which does such stuff in a wee, be it just for a month to finish this project. not sure if they still support CS6, though, so you may need to contact support so they can dig out an older version for you. Otherwise it would of course entirely be possible to re-create the spheroid functionality with a script or an expression setup, but the limitations still apply.
