So I'm running AE 2020 for the very first time, I try to make a new project, OK, that works, but every time I try to create a new composition, I see a flashing box on the screen, and nothing, nada, no comp. I'm running on an iMac with High Sierra, 32 gigs RAM, never had this kind of problem with After Effects, this is perhaps the worst bug I've ever seen in it, and I'm a user from the COSA days. Thoughts, folks?

If you go back to the COSA days, I'm a little bit surprised that you're surprised.
When there used to be installation CDs, Adobe had to get the software pretty much right. Now the pressure's off -- get the code out the door, let the users find the bugs and get out bug fixes as necessary.
I'm just now mulling over whether I should install the final CC 2019. They probably got all the bug fixes in they're going to do.

Like I stated, I've been using After Effects since the very beginning, and even took John Knoll to meet the COSA Daves when they first showed off the program at a San Fran MacWorld around a thousand years ago. He pulled out his checkbook and bought his copy on the spot. I've never, ever seen a version of AE that couldn't create a composition without crashing, this is simply beyond the pale.

Comp Drawing issues are almost always related to GPU drivers and under-powered GPU. Try disabling hardware acceleration in both the Project Settings (these should have been disabled by default if they were not viable for the feature) and the Preferences Dialog (Display Section).

That's the very first thing I tried, no dice. I downgraded and installed 2019, no problem. This is just awful.
