While extending the animation's duration

Community Beginner ,
Jul 26, 2023 Jul 26, 2023

Hello all,

I make an animation, duration = 7 sec, works out fine. More or less it's a simple lower third, with Rectangle & Tect layers.

Something happens and I need to extend it from 7 sec to 12 sec, to fit the video better. So, I pre-comp, save the composition, open a new project (duration 12 sec) and import the saved comp.

The new timeline is now 12 sec but everything (Rectangle + Text) dissapears at 7.00 ; no matter if I transfer the closing keyframes from 6.45 to 10.45 (to move the closing towards the 12 sec) ... there's nothing there after the 7.00 mark. It's like those keyframes don't exist.

How can I counter that ? What is it that I'm missing ?

Thank you in advance.

Hi 🙂

To understand your question right, some screenshots would be really helpful. How exactly does it look like in the original comp, how in the imported one and what do you want to achieve in the imported comp?

To me it sounds like that you are importing a comp that is 7 sec long into a comp that is 12 sec long, right? So, no matter what, the 7 sec won't automatically stretch to 12 sec just because you exttend the length of the time line. You will either have to re adjust the keyframes in the precomp, which will have to be 12 sec long as well, or you can use some time stretching to extend it to 12 sec.

Is that helpful? If not, please post some screenshots with your question to understand it better. 🙂

Hi Melanie,

Thank you veru mych for your time and attention.

You did understand my situation correctly, yet I couldn't re-adjust the keyframes (of the 7 sec timeline) to the 12 sec timeline. They did exist in the timeline but they were not working. The reason ?

I didn't know I needed to extend the timeline for the layers ... their "timeline bar" was ending on the 7 sec mark. After that there were "spare" keyframes, waiting for the timeline to be strectched, so that they could have a meaning. I kind of thought that this was not necessary, otherwise were would the keyframes stand (between 7-12 sec) ? But it was necessary after all.

Once again, thank you for your time and attention.

If there are keyframes and you want to maintain the original timing of the animation, follow these steps:

  1. Extend the length of the main composition and any nested compositions to the desired new length
  2. Select all layers and press the U key to reveal all keyframes
  3. Extend all layers to the length of the modified composition by extending the out-point of every layer
  4. Drag a selection around all keyframes at the end of the original animation and drag them to the end of the timeline

That's it.

If you can live with timing changes, open the original composition, select all layers, and Pre-compose making sure that the new comp is set to the length of the layers. After you pre-compose, edit the duration of the original composition (Ctrl/Cmnd + k), apply Time Remapping to the original Pre-comp, and move the last Time Remapping keyframe one frame past the end of the timeline.

If you are creating a MOGRT to use in Premiere Pro, set Timeline markers at the first frame of the comp and the beginning of the last animation, edit the markers and change the properties to  Protected Region, then extend the duration of the protected region to cover the entire animation. You can now save a MOGRT that you can stretch to any length you wan in Premiere Pro.

If none of these workflows help, we need to see the timeline with the modified properties of all layers revealed. Select all layers, press the 'u' key twice, take a screenshot, then copy and paste the file or drag it to the reply field so you can see it in your post and let us know what is going on in the comp.  Please don't use the Drag & drop here or... button. It's a pain to download the images to see them.

Dear Rick,

Thank you very much for you interest and the time you took to respond and inform me.

I do keep your response for potential future reference. My current problem was solved by ... stretching the timeline bars of each layer. After that the (re-adjusted) keyframes had a meaning and worked perfectly well. Prior to that they were just there but the timeline was stopping on the 7 sec mark, so everything after that was not to do anything functional.

Thanks again !
