Why does the magnify effect tool double the text layer underneath?

New Here ,

Hi everyone,

After some help please. I have used the distort/magnify effect on a text layer. While it does magnify the layer underneath the adjustment layer (to which the effect/preset is applied), it also doubles the text. Hoping someone knew why?

Thanks in advance

Gary

Your cropped screenshot does not tell us anything about your comp or your workflow. I think you have a background layer, then a text layer, then some kind of graphic on top of the text, then a graphic of a magnifying glass, then, because you said Adjustment Layer, you have put an Adjustment layer on top of everything and applied the Magnify effect to the adjustment layer. If that is your comp setup then everything is normal and working as it should. The adjustment layer affects every layer below it.

If you want to have the magnifying class act as a magnifier and make the text layer only or the text and the background grow then your comp setup should be a little different. Your comp should be set up like this:

  1. Magnifying glass graphic with the Anchor Point in the center of the lense part of the graphic
  2. Your Adjustment layer with Magnify effect applied and set so the size matches the size of the magnifying glass lens and the Center (of the effect) tied to the Position Property of the Magnifying Glass Graphic with a simple expression created with the Pickwhip like this:
    thisComp.layer("Manifying Glass").transform.position
  3. The graphic above the text
  4. The text layer
  5. The Background

When you animate the position of the Magnifying glass layer the adjustment layer and the effect will follow along because you made it the parent of the adjustment layer and the mask on the adjustment will limit the effect to just inside the mask. All of the layers below will be magnified as you animate the position of the top layer. You can't just parent the layers together because the Center property of the Magnify effect takes its coordinates from the comp, not from the layer. The comp would look something like this:

This is really basic stuff. I strongly suggest you spend some time with the tutorials found in the Learn & Support menu on the After Effects product page or that you check out the Learn section of the After Effects Home screen.

If you click none it will hide all the text except for the text in the magnifying lens. Im having an issue with this too. How do I get the other layers below the adjustment layer which has the magnifying effect on it to only show the text magnified and not the text in its regular state as well . In other words, Im seeing double when in the magnifying glass, the magnified text and the same text right behind it. Help
