Binary Code Animation Help

Any thoughts on recreating this animation? I've got my text / binary figured out with a range selector and wiggle path to make the 1/0's flip back and forth. The only thing I am unsure of is how they made the boxes behind the numbers flip on and off. Anyone who could provide any insight i would greatly appreciate!

That is easily done with Buy Red Giant Text Anarchy | Text Animation Plugin for Adobe After Effects.

Your biggest problem is probably trying to create everything with one text layer. A second text layer below with just a couple of random squares using a dingbat font and a text animator would do the trick. Then all that is left is playing with glow effects and blend modes.
