Black screen flashes / flickering and After Effects crashes

Community Beginner ,

After Effects keeps crashing on my laptop. I've started encountering this issues for the past week. My screen would flash black twice or so and After Effects would become unresponsive and would close by itself within 15 seconds or so. I've updated the drivers for my graphics card but I still get the issue. I don't know a whole lot about computers so I would appreciate any help.

Managed to solve it on my own. I got multiple blue screens of death with the error of "Video_TDR_Failure (nvlddmkm.sys)" so I did a clean re-install of my NVIDIA graphics card as per the instructions on the following website: Video_TDR_Failure (nvlddmkm.sys) on Windows 10 [Fixed] - Driver Easy

Now my After Effects is working great! I've been able to keep it open for hours and use it without error.

Hi plee333 ,

Sorry to know that you are getting a black screen which causes After Effects to freeze and close itself.

  • What kind of a computer and OS do you have?
  • Does your computer have 2 video cards?
  • What's the exact version of After Effects that you're using? FAQ: How to find the exact version of After Effects you're using?
  • You mentioned that it started happening since a week - have you noticed if anything changed on your computer? Maybe an OS update?
  • When does the app close itself? Are you able to create a new project?

Let us know, we're here to help.

Thanks,

Rameez

My computer is the ASUS ROG GL551JW-DS71: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00T7XRH2A/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o05_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1  I bought this laptop a little over 3 years ago.

I don't know if I have two video cards but I do have a discrete graphics card.

I am using the latest version of After Effects: v.16.0

I don't have a great memory so I don't really know if anything major has changed on my computer.

I'm able to open the program fine and do things on it at first but it just crashes at somewhat random times. Sometimes I'm just clicking around in the program itself and my whole screen flashes black and the program crashes or I could just be watching a video on Google Chrome and I get the black flashes and only After Effects crashes.

When I do get the black flashes, sometimes the After Effects window will be minimized and parts of it will be all white. After 15 seconds or so, the program will just close on its own.

Thought I should provide another update. I opened After Effects and made some changes to one of my projects and clicked on File -> Save and then I got a black screen. The black screen persisted for longer than usual; around a couple of seconds. Then After Effects was mostly white and unresponsive. The program closed after around 15 seconds.

I forgot about this but I just remembered as I was trying to render something in Media Encoder. I first got this problem when I was trying to render a rather large file (2-3 GB). I got the black flashes and Media Encoder would say the render 'Failed'. It eventually worked when I changed the render settings to something with a smaller output file.
