Just seen someone made a Instagram meme today on the new Animal Crossing game where Tom Nook (the raccoon in both meme and direct video) shatters and turns into pieces.

I cannot find ways to create effects so I'm hoping someone could provide me tips on how to create the effect cos I'm working on similar projects.

The footage for the meme is taken from the very first part of the original direct video (0:05-0:15).

The effect is literally called "shatter" in AE, but it has it's limits.

If you want to go beyond those, your better make the effect in a 3d software. Doing this with shape layers or masks will require a lot of keyframes and carefully timing. You will be faster doing this in actually 3d space and the result will look better.
