All updated CC suite. Recently Media Encoder cannot import any AE comps - even if the comp is as simple as a still image.
Cannot send from AE either - it will open Media Encoder but nothing will happen afterwards.
This is a critical failure which essentially renders AE useless - I'm not going to render out AVI.
Thank you if you have a solution.

Make sure that you have compatible versions of AE and AME installed. Make sure your AE is up to date. If you have recently installed any new software or updated an anti-virus program check to make sure that is not the source of the problem. It is highly unlikely that corrupted preferences would cause this problem but it's easy to reset them.
If you still have no joy it only takes a few minutes to uninstall then re-install AE and the AME using the Creative Cloud app.
If all else fails it is not a bad idea to render a DI (digital intermediate) using a lossless production Intra-frame codec and then render your interframe GOP deliverable using the AME. About 90% of my work is rendered to as a DI and then the final edit is done in Premiere Pro because that is usually a more efficient and much faster workflow in the long run.

Thanks Rick.
Just to report, I did try clean uninstall and reinstall AE and AME latest version, but it still did not work.
So I tried clean uninstall and reinstall AE and AME both 2017 version - it's the only available "other version" for AME (AE has even older versions available in creative cloud app). And it's working fine now.
I don't know why the latest version has this error
