Maybe you're mixing up the internal compression (H.264) with the AVI container? Other than that it could be some weird side effect of your Windows Media Library being the defualt file handler. Changing that to another program might fix the issue.

Try to rename the file from core.avi to core.mp4
After Effects does not change your file type out of the blues. The video itself is an AVI.
If the above doesn't work, use Adobe Media Encoder to convert the file from AVI to MP4 by using one of the H264 presets available.
