regular crashes

I am getting regular crashes in After Effects and Media Encoder that only the Task Manager can extract me from. Is there a document that has steps one takes to clean up and tune up things like caches that I can do to narrow things down? A side effect?- my Windows 10 laptop takes 15 minutes to cold boot rather than the usual 2 minutes.
