Removing a background from a video?

So I'm trying to remove the background from a certain part of Lord of the Rings, where Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli are climbing up a hill. I want to replace the sky with a photo that I've taken. Is there a good way to do this aside from painstakingly rotoscoping and masking out the characters every frame as they move? Thanks!

depends entirely on the shot. if there are significant differences in the brightness or color of the sky vs the other elements, you could use a keying effect such as extract. there could be also a combination of methods.
