Render is different from preview

Hello all!

Okay, I am new to AE, but when I create something and play it back it looks fine. Then when I go to render it out it changes. It does two things, 1) it seems to crop it a bit, that or puts a black boarder around it. 2) More importantly it just doesn't look the same, the shadows are soft in the pre render and are very hard in the final render.

Do I have a setting flipped which blurs things while I am working on it?

I have attached a before and after photo:

Your viewport is not set to "Active Camera" and you have not created an actual 3D camera, making it impossible to correctly preview any 3D-based render. There is quite likely nothing at all wrong, but of course rendering from teh active camera will look from the non-renderable "Front" viewport. I would suggest you read up on the basics.
