I'm creating some sequences from a 3D model with 3DSMax and Vray's toon effect - what you see in the image below is a transparent layer, with the red being a background solid in AE. This approach is neccesary as eventually I'll be adding in paper layers and coloured fills underneath the linework. I am trying to make these lines look hand drawn, so as well as Turbulent Displacment I was hoping to use the 'roughen edges' effect. This works as default on top of a vector line, but when applied to these raster lines they just disappear.
Is there an alternative effect that can roughen up these lines or a way roughen edges can be made to work?

Nothing to do with any of that. Roughen Edges doesn't care how a line is generated. It always operates on pixel data. Everything else is just a matter of settings and you simply need to find the right combination of edge widths, noise scale and all that to prevent erosion becoming too strong and making your lines disappear.

Just one more thing, that effect doesn't seem to apply to a Luma Matte is that to be expected?

Thanks you were right. I think it was an issue with my alpha channel causing me problems actually. Sorted now.
