I am looking for a preset that will allow me to "blow up" a segment of a graphic and giving the effect of shrapnel as the effect follows a pattern. Specifically, I am looking to create a path to “cut” through a word, resulting in an empty space where the path ran through, moving along that path and giving the appearance of debris from the object being removed. Ideas? Any assistance would be most appreciated.

No such thing as a preset. The effect itself could require using multiple steps and effects. As per your description it would involve creating some kind of matte or mask to "cut" into the object and at least some sort of particle effect to create some dust/ debris/ sparkles whatever. The specifics will entirely depend on what look you're after. Creating an abstract, stylized look is entirely different from ultrarealist and even things such as the font used matter to sell the illusion believably.
