When I try to assign a keyword to a photo, I keep getting "There was an error writing metadata to xxx.jpg"

I am running Windows 10 with 8 GB memory on a lenovo z70.  The photos are on a samsung external HD. I have applied most or all the fixes posted on this forum without success. When I move the photos to the internal HD, I have no problem assigning keywords.

I'm having a similar issue and after trying everything instructed here (https://community.adobe.com/t5/bridge-discussions/bridge-won-t-recognize-my-files-in-desktop-or-documents-help/m-p/11156981#M19093) the problem is still not resolved. I tried changing the permissions on the HDD that contained the file that needed more metadata and luckily all issues were resolved.

You can check out the steps below:
1. Right-click the drive containing the file > Properties
2. Select Security Tab > Edit button
3. Select Everyone Group > Choose Full control Permissions in Allow column > OK

Windows 10 Pro 22H2
Bridge 12.0.1.246

I'm using Bridge since years and years, and I'm having this same issue only since my upgrade to Catalina.

Sorry for my language but Mac updates SUCKS! and I have to do updates since now most PS et BR updates are available only if your OS is updated....
Hope you get your issue fixed by the way... Regards

Hi Julient,

Unfortunately, there's nothing that Adobe can fix here. You are correct that Mac updates suck because one of the important Preferences they do not do a very good job of transferring over to the new OS is permissions. Because you mentioned that you just updated, my guess is that you need to OK permission for Bridge to access your various location on your Mac. Please try this:

Go to your System Preferences and select Security and Privacy (found in the top section). Now click on the Privacy setting (last tab). Now click on the lock on the bottom left and provide your Administrator code. Now select the Full Disk Access option and click on the "+" symbol. This will bring up the standard Mac Open window and let you add any application you want or need to have full access. Look for Bridge, select it, it will now appear in that window, and make sure it's checked. Next, go to the Files and Folders option and do the same thing as above (although there's nothing to check, just add. Close everything down and see if that makes it all work.

Please let me know

[Note: these images are from an older OS, the process is the same.]

Hi Gary and thanks for your reponse.

Unfortunatly I already did set up these permissions, also done an Onyx clean up and that issue is still remaining. Breath in, breath out...

I'm just going to update on Big Sur as some people apparently says that this OS is 'better'...

Since sometimes I'm getting really less and less happy about Mac OS.

Enjoy your day,

Julien

This was the fix for me as well. Updated to Bridge 10.0.0.124 and it works now.

I had this problem a year or two ago, and it fixed itself on an update. Now the problem is back. I am current on all software as of today's date.

I unistalled Bridge and reinstalled it, this did not help. I ran PhotoMechanic for the same task and it worked fine.

I'm not sure if this is the same situation or not - I had been using the latest Adobe Bridge 2019 and was adding metadata/keywords with no problem from a network drive (I'm using video files so local drives are not an option -- also my coworkers are accessing the same footage). Then suddenly, this week I added new media to Bridge and I cannot add any metadata. As soon as I try I get an error message that reads: "The file xxxxxxx.mov cannot store XMP metadata. No changes will occur." It doesn't seem to matter if the video clip is .mov or .mp4 or 4k or HD. Clips I added last week are fine. I don't really understand this error message, as it implies that the metadata is stored in the video file, not within the Adobe Bridge universe.

I tried the adobe raw downgrade but since I'm using video clips, not images, I didn't think it was the solution and it wasn't. I'm on a Mac with High Sierra 10.13.5.

Any ideas?

Thanks - Steve

Here’s what has worked for a lot of us:

I installed the 11.1 camera raw plugin and the metadata error is gone.

Thanks, Abby. I think I tried that, but maybe I didn't do it right? I was told that all I had to do was download the plugin and install it. That it would override the 11.2. plugin. I'm not sure how to test to see if it did actually downgrade to 11.1. Also, since it had been working just fine with the latest Bridge, I wonder if it's because the video clips that I can't attach keywords to are from a different media folder than the rest. Strangely, though, they are on the same drive.

If there are specific 11.1 steps I should take or methods for testing that it did indeed downgrade I'd love to know. Thanks!

Back to Camera Raw 11.1, and it's working back. Clearly a bug in the latest version of Camera Raw.

Not only the assignment of ratings is not working, it is also not possible to open the file in Photoshop (while working from a NAS).

The source of the problem is not Bridge but the latest update from Camera Raw (version 11.2). I went back to version 11.1 and everything is working fine for me!

, how did you do to downgrade Camera Raw in Bridge?

I'm alway a little hesitant to update IOS right away, but I updated my IOS to Sierra 10.12.6 and I believed that solved my issue.

Same problem here.

Config: macOS Mojave (10.14.2), Adobe Bridge (9.0.2.219), Synology NAS DS1815+ (6.2.1-23824-5).

I'm not able to assign keywords or ratings in Bridge to my NAS pictures. When I copy them to an external harddisc it's no problem.

I cleared cache, installed Bridge again, restart NAS, Mac but sofar no results. Till last week it worked good for me.

Would like to see a solution for this issue ASAP please!

The workaround mentioned in the other thread in this Adobe Bridge Forum works for me: select in Bridge, open a file in Camera Raw and choose the rating you want. Click READY, return to Bridge and your rating is done. Not the best solution but a least you can use the ratings.

Lumigraphics  BIOS and external HD have been checked for updates (none). A different cable was tried to no avail. I find it curious that people with different systems and setups are having the same problem with version 9.0.2

Has anyone received/found a solution to this? I waited on hold with Adobe Support yesterday for a couple hours, and then when I finally got an agent to try to help me, his Bomgar Session crashed, and he never emailed me or contacted me to complete helping me.  I waited again for Adobe Support but after 1 hour had to give up.

Anyone know if there is an email support that I can contact.

I really need to get this working.

For those that are wondering, the step taken by the agent that didn't work (before the Bomgar session crashed)

1-Purged Cache

2-Tried going back to a previous version.

Does anyone know how to get Adobe to address this? I have a 25K image library that I maintain. I NEED this to work!

I'm also having this issue, and it just started today.  Yesterday I was writing keywords to files in the same folder no problem.  Going back to finish it today and having this error.  I have restarted all adobe applications that I had running, but it didn't fix it.

I also purged all my cache, and it's still not working.
