I tend to use library ebooks from Libby/Overdrive which I download through my laptop to Pocketbook Touch Lux 3 reader – I’ve done it for years and it worked fine.
Recently I got new laptop. I downloaded ADE (4.5.11, Windows 10), I signed in with Adobe ID, I can open books in ADE without issues.
However, when I tried transferring to Pocketbook, and opening the book on there, I got error message.
“Unable to open the book. This book is possibly damaged or encoded with a copy protection. First, activate an Adobe ID on your device (Settings->Content…-Adobe DRM).”
But I am signed in with my adobe ID and I checked that both ADE on the laptop and my Pocketbook are authorized to the same account.
The only other thing is that I changed my adobe ID password in the meantime. I’m not sure if that would cause issues for the Pocketbook – it still shows my adobe ID in settings and the only option is to deactivate. There is no option to sign in/out. There is option to add adobe account and I tried signing in to the same account (I only have one) with new details but it said “Activation failed. Check the designated date on the device” – I’m not sure what that means but I’m not really trying to add an account, just keep using the one it is already associated with).
I am cautious about deactivating or deauthorizing devices in case I mix things up even more and can’t reauthorize.

Update: I tried a few things. I managed to sign out and sign back into my adobe ID with the new password on the Pocketbook. But then ADE wasn't detecting the device. Uninstalling and reinstalling ADE did not help.
Eventually I did factory reset on Pocketbook. That helped with device detection - yay!
Somewhere in the meantime I also de-authorised and re-authorised my laptop in hope that would help.
But now I'm back to square one. Both of my devices are authorised, with the same ID. I can open books in ADE on my laptop. (I can still open a handful of my old books on Pocketbook too).
But when I try to get a new library book (which I did for years with no issues) I still have the same problem. It opens in ADE on the laptop. I transfer the file, it doesn't open on Pocketbook. It gives me the same message about needing to activate adobe ID on my device - except that it is activated. If signing out and it and factory reset did not solve the issue, I'm truly at a loss.

Final update, in case someone runs into similar issue in the future. I managed to get help from Pocketbook customer service (gold star for them!). Apparently issues occur with ADE 4.5 and borrowed books. I uninstalled and installed ADE 3 instead, formatted memory on my ereader, downloaded the borrowed book again and it works now!

It is easiest to fix by removing the DRM (epubor?) than trying to solve Adobe DRM issues.

Same issue here, solved by installing ADE 3.0, as advised. Thanks !!!

I had similar problem with an epub borrowed from a library. Updating the software of my Pocketbook did not help and version 3 of ADE for my laptop's OS was not available.
Finally the solution in my case (Pocketbook PB740 = Inkpad 3) was as easy as instead of transferring the epub itsef to transfer the .acsm file. After syncing the .acsm to Pocketbook it showed up in Pocketbook as a just added book but an arrow in its cover picture. Clicking this "book" icon started the download of the actual epub.
And when the download was finished, the epub opened the way it was supposed to.
So after using hours of trying to make the transferred epub to open in Pocketbook, the solution was NOT to transfer the epub at all, but transfer the .ACSM file to Pocketbook 😄

Thank you so much for sharing your experience! I work in libraries and help people get ebooks on their devices all the time, and this was one that had me really stuck. Dragging the .ACSM file into the Digital Editions folder of the PocketBook Era fixed the issue, and I'm super grateful to you for posting this suggestion-you're a lifesaver!

I’ve had a problem with downloading books on my e-reader but it can work if you download it via dropbox. I have a pocketbook btw
Download the book on your computer/laptop
Download adobe digital editions onto your laptop as well and open the downloaded book in adobe digital editions
make a dropbox account and also log into your drop box account on the ereader (with a pocketbook you go to settings -> accounts -> Dropbox and then log in
on the Dropbox website when you go to your files there should be one synced with your ereader upload the book into that file
get on your ereader and go back to the settings-> accounts -> Dropbox-> syncing (click that so it can syncs the books from your laptop to your ereader)
then i was able to open and read my new downloaded books. I hope it will work with yours too
