How to "split" the end of a brush stroke (to make it look like a ribbon)?

I made some brush strokes that are meant to look like ribbons.

I followed a tutorial where you select the brushstroke and do "Object > Expand Appearance." This seems to change it from a simple stroke to an actual object.

I'm not sure how I can now split the ends so they look like ribbons.

Here's where I'm at now...

and I want the ends of the ribbons to look like this...

My wife is telling me to use the "Anchor Point Tool" under the Pen and add an anchor point and pull it in. It doesn't seem to let me to add an Anchor Point though. Whenever I hover the tool over the end of a ribbon, it says either "intersect" or "path."

This is probably super simple but I'm missing something here.

Yes super simple indeed. Use the add anchor path tool not the anchor path tool. You can also simply hover pver with the regular pen tool, and click when the tool cursor changes from pen/asterisk to pen/+.

Hi there,

Thank you for reaching out to us. If I get your query correctly, you want to split the ends of the object so that it looks like a ribbon. There are many ways to split the ends of an object. One of them is explained in this small video tutorial: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0pe4Klf9JSI

Let us know if it helps or you need any further assistance.
