Can InDesign tell me which saved styles/swatches are not being used (by the open document)?

Just wrapped up my 2nd InDesign project, which required me to try out a bunch of styles and swatches. Some I ended up sticking with, some not, and I kinda lost track of which ones the magazine needs to render correctly.

Can InDesign search said document for stranded/unused styles/swatches, and point them out to me for potential deletion? All this experimenting was just for this single project, anyway. Just so I don't accidentally delete anything important while cleaning up after the unnecessary bloat manually.

That is true. But be aware that used styles can be hidden when thay are used inside other styles like basedon, as GREP and nested styles, inside TOC styles and cross references.

if you want to get rid of all unused paragraph styles, list all the unused styles in the Paragraph Styles panel and drag them to the bin to delete them. However, it could be that you are confronted with a message like the one below (from my German InDesign):

Remove Paragraph Style
Delete style "style's name"
and replace with: [ List of paragraph styles ]

This is because in this case the other unused style is based on the one you currently like to remove.
You would not get the message if you first remove the other style.

So don't be afraid to replace all the unused styles with the basic paragraph style named [Einf. Abs.] in my German InDesign.

As others have said, there’s the Select All Unused command in the Swatches panel menu. I suggest using the similar command in Object Styles, Character Styles, and Paragraph Styles first to remove unused styles. Any swatch used in a style will be considered in use, even if the style is not used.

Just wanted to add to @Dave Creamer of IDEAS's instructions that Styles panels (Object, Paragraph, and Character) also have the Select All Unused menu.

On the Swatches panel's menu, Select Unused Swatches.

You can deselect the unused but wanted swatches by Control (Windows) or Command (Mac) clicking on them.

Three is a similar "Select All Unused" option in the fly out menu of the Paragraph Styles panel. It doesn't work identically to deleting swatches, as you have the option when creating a style to base it on another style, so even when a style isn't used to mark a paragraph, it can still be "in use" as part of the definition of another style. So instead of just deleting them all in one fell swoop, sometimes it requires more care and (sometimes) more steps to remove all unused paragraph styles.
