I just want the page numbering to start from 1 AND be on the right page (so number 1 is right and 2 is left, 3 is right and so on) that's all. Thanks.

Are you working in a language that reads left-to-right? If so, making right-hand pages even-numbered is contrary to convention and will not please your readers. If you are working in a language that reads right-to-left, bee sure you have installed and are using a version of InDesign intended for those languages.

If, in spite of convention you want to put even numbers on right-hand pages you can force InDesign to do this by selecting the first page of the document in the Pages Panel, the opeing the Numbering and Section Options dialog and change the numbering from Automatic to Start Page Numbering at and enter 2 in the field. This will make your first page a left-hanf page.

In the Pages Panel select the page you just numbered 2 and right click. UNcheck Allow Selected Spread to Shuffle. Go back to the Numbering and Section Options dialog and reset the start number to 1.

  1. The document must be a double sided document.
  2. For the numbers create a Paragraph Style with the alignment away from the spine.
  3. Create a layer for the page number on top of all layers, so that it will not covered up by other content in the document.
  4. On this layer create on both pages of the spread of the master/parent page, each, a text frame outside the margins, where you want the page numbers to be.
  5. Create an object style for this text frame, where you define position relative to the spine and the paragraph style for the page numbers.
  6. Inset the page number marker.
  7. Apply this master/parent page to the pages.
