Pages set up with 3 columns act as spread sheets

When I add a new page and start to set it up for text it automatically sets it up with three columns. When I start to type text as soon as I hit enter the text starts in the next column. If I try to add overset text to the page it turns the column in to another three columns. It is acting as a spread sheet sett up.  I don't know how I inadvertently set this up but I can't find a way to undo it. The master pages are set to one column per page as far as I can tell.  Thanks in advance.

Check your default text frame options: it looks like they are set up to get a 3 column text

as I hit enter the text starts in the next column

That is a normal behaviour. Enter send the text to the next column. Return creates a new paragraph.

There is no correlation between how you set up the columns on a page and the number of columns in a text frame, so you can have a one column page with a 3 columns text frame.

You both gave me the correct but you both created a new question. I have a Windows PC which only has an enter key. I don't see a return key.  This seems to have worked in the past. Am I missing something?

Thank you for your patience in answering my questions. I am learning this program on the fly. It sure does make it interesting.

The Enter key on the number pad is a column break by default. Use the one on the Alphabet pad. That corresponds to the Return key on Mac...

Hi @Northporter ,

please share the document and attach it to your reply.

FWIW: You cannot do this by answering per mail; you have to visit the forum.

To answer your questions:

Could be that you changed your default object style for text frames to another one with three columns.

Could be that you type the wrong "enter" character with the numeric part of your keyboard. Do not use the one with the name "Enter". That would insert a special character that will force all text after it to the next column.

Thank you. I had the text frame options set to 3 columns. I reset it to 1 column. The problem is solved.
