P: Photoshp Beta (25.4.0.2439) Program Error when Duplicating Layer to different document

Explorer ,
Dec 22, 2023 Dec 22, 2023

Copy link to clipboard

Photoshop Beta 25.4.0 Release.

Right clicking on layer and selecting "duplicate" then setting the destination to a different document results in a "Could not complete the Duplicate Layer command because of a program error.

However, the duplication does occur correctly.

Using Adobe Photoshop Beta 25.4.0, I can no longer use the move tool to select a photo and drag it into a different photo.

Copy/Paste seems to be the only option.

Have tried resetting the preferences and using the text tool as someone mentioned and so far nothing works.

@Aussiejf  It is a known issue with the beta. I'll merge your post with the existing thread on the issue

@Bog22 wrote: Is there a way to downgrade to the exact previous version? When I select "other versions" I only get 25.3, which then prompts me with an unremovable notification right on top of the documents bar, that I need to upgrade.

This is intentional. The purpose of the Beta version is to find and report bugs to the product team, so using older versions of the beta does not make sense and is unhelpful to them. What you can do instead is use the released version.

EDIT: The post from @davescm showed up after I replied. Sorry Dave.

@davescm Hello Dave! Exactly my point, when selecting "Other Versions" to downgrade in case something is wrong with the current release, you can only pick the "base" version. In this case 25.3.0 and 25.2.0. More granularity here would be nice, especially since I noticed upgrades for same "decimal" version, for example 25.3.1 had multiple minor updates.

It would be nice to be able to switch from 24.0.0.2050 to 24.0.0.2010 or whatever code that would have.

That is fairly standard across all the apps (release and beta). I don't know why the older beta versions are still downloadable at all as there is little value to Adobe in having users test and feedback on old beta verions.

@Bog22 On Windows try zipping (or copying to some other path) the Photoshop installation folder ("c:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop (Beta)") before updating to the newest beta. If the current beta is broken, rename the install folder (keep it, don't remove!) and copy back the latest known working version. Before trying to update again move the folders so that the broken version is in the original folder. I've "rolled back" the beta that way several times, but it's risky and might cause more issues than it solves, including breaking your PS installation.

Trying to drag and drop a file into another in Photoshop Beta - says there is a program error preventing this action.  Links to irrelevant article about updating Photoshop.  Beta is the current version.  Thought this error was with just with HEIC files.

I know it works properly in the current Photoshop version, so I saved the two files, closed all files in Photoshop Beta and tried to close the program.  I get the same stupid error box with the same two options, learn how to fix and OK.  Program will not close as the loop is to this error message.

Very frustrating.

Hi default50nakpdk04pn,

This sounds like a known issue that we are currently working on.  Please test again in the upcoming beta release. Thank you for reporting this bug.

I'll probably do this wrong but...  using latest Photoshop beta (updated today in fact) I have always been able to join scanned or cropped photos and documents together using the image merge tool (file, automate, photomerge) but recently it is failing with an error message (attached) The "normal" version works fine so I am not stuck but its a bit annoying to find a feature I have been using for years suddenly stop.

The bug is back in Adobe Photoshop Version: 25.5.0 20240111.m.2462 e81df03 x64 😕

25.4.0.2434 - works fine

25.4.0.2439 - doesn't work

25.5.0.2455 - works fine

25.4.0.2462 - doesn't work, again!!!

It seems the team haven't added regression tests for this bug. Shame.

Yes, and the problem of attempting to move an image from one open file to
another is also still there in Beta v25.5.0.2024.

Use the current version of Photoshop 2024 (released), which is 25.3.1.

Jane -

This problem in the Beta has been acknowledged for quite some time now, and
yet remains unfixed. You have (in not so many words) indicated in other
posts that the Beta is produced so that Photoshop can be improved based on
user feedback. Surely no one who has this problem, is going to continue
using the Beta until it is fixed. So how does this help Adobe?

Adobe will fix whatever is causing this bug and (hopefully) we will never see it in the released version.

I am a volunteer who does not work for Adobe and won't second guess how complex this one is.

I recognize that you are just a volunteer Jane (and that you do good work
helping others and it's appreciated), but you are quick to defend Adobe and
you have missed my point. If Adobe does not correct problems reported
numerous times by numerous users in a timely fashion, there is no reason
for those users to continue using the Beta when the problem is part of our
daily workflow. If we stop using the Beta, there will be less feedback
thereby curtailing user interface.

Some bugs are harder to fix than other, even though it seems that they should be easy. The beta version is for testing. It's not really for production work. So if you want to see what's new, find bugs and help improve PS, use the beta, but if you need to get work done, used the released version.

Yes, of course, that is the perfect response Chuck!

However, few of us have time to jump back and forth between the two
programs. Some things like moving an image from one open document to
another open document shouldn't be that difficult to fix. It works
perfectly in the regular version (always has). It has also worked
perfectly in past versions of the Beta until shortly before Christmas.

Adobe wants us to be Beta testers, meaning they want us to use the Beta and
provide feedback on the new things they offer. But if Adobe wants us to
continue doing that then they can't screw up the things people use everyday
and not fix them in a timely fashion.

Some bugs are a game stopper. There have been a few, where I stopped using the beta version until that bug was fixed. Perhaps that will make Adobe move faster on the bugs that are critical. But if you can't work, then don't use the beta. I don't recall if they still do this, but Adobe used to tell us that the beta and prerelease versions were not for production work.

@Stu32314935j7it It was fine in 2434, then broken in 2439, then again fine in 2455 and then broken in 2462 and 2464.

The beta releases started resembling nightly builds released with not much internal testing at all.

I'm fine with testing those releases, provided there is a direct and timely response from Adobe - is the bug confirmed, reproducible, will it be fixed, etc..

I've reported many bugs (including this one which was merged into a bug reported later by some other user), some of them fixed without any response or acknowledgement from Adobe (like broken gradient map in production (non-beta) Photoshop which prevented opening PSD files). Sometimes it seems like I'm screaming into the void...

Most of us are smart enough to figure that out on our own Chuck. Simple
things that work in the regular version should also work in the Beta. When
they don't, but have been, they should be immediately fixed when reported.
There is no excuse for this! Adobe has continued to release several
versions of the Beta since this problem was first reported. Does anyone
who actually works for Adobe, in a position to light some fires, ever read
these reports?
