This is a bug. Please don't move it to the Discussions tab.

And please don't merge into another unrelated thread. I will report a bug with this thread.

------------------------------------

I made a YouTube video using a keyboard mouse overlay to show what action I'm taking. I hope you can refer to refer to it.

https://youtu.be/Cle6dEgP5_Y

------------------------------------

I was disappointed that there were so many bugs that were not fixed in 24.5, but I was still trying to give it a shot.

However, this bug is pretty serious. Really...

Please see the video I attached.
If you watch the video, you will see that I am shaking the screen.
I'm not using a hand tool, it should release automatically, but that thing is sticky.

To release this sticky, pinned handtool, you'll need to make one more unconditional click.

Here's how I've organized them for your reference.

< What I can be sure of >

  1. Window10 (Tested a total of 14 PCs)
  2. Use WacomTablet
  3. Not related to preferences at all (Especially not related to Spring loaded, Flick panning stuff things)
  4. I've tried all the known Photoshop troubleshooting methods and no improvement.
  5. Even reinstalling Windows does the same thing
  6. Only in 24.5 does this bug occur with certainty. I can't reproduce it at all in earlier versions.

I'm not sure about the >

  1. Mac OS not tested
  2. I couldn't even test if it was a GPU company difference. I and my team all use NVIDIA

And while there are a few threads pointing this out, there doesn't seem to be a proper plan to fix it.

If this is not fixed in 24.6, 24.6 will be equally unusable as 24.5.

Current status on this "stuck mouse-down" issue.

We're continuing to have extraordinary difficulty reproducing the issues at Adobe. We understand that for many of you in this thread the issue is happening very frequently, to the point of making the latest versions of Photoshop unusable.

Some of our users (Vit K, Alan P) in this thread added instrumentation to Photoshop using developer tools (Spy++) and observed in their fail cases that Photoshop was not even getting the WM_LBUTTONUP message

This happens to me and my Wacom tablet from time to time too. It's not a
Photoshop problem, you need to restart your tablet. That usually fixes it
for me.

@DanielAllen No it's photoshop problem. This may be related to tablet, but I don't think it is. Because I made this thread last year, when I reinstalled OS on multiple PCs and installed only Photoshop without connecting or installing wacom, I was able to reproduce this bug with my mouse.

We think weve made some progress on this bug.

I have made some code changes which are reflected in the current Beta builds, m.2528 or higher, and will be avaialble upcoming 25.6 release. I am hoping these changes will offer some relief for Mouse users. There is more work to be done with Pen devices which will unfortunately have to wait until a later release (hopefully 25.7).

For those of you who have access to the latest beta (check your build number), if you can try things out and report back, that would be appreciated. The bug is still really hard for us to reproduce, so if you can still reproduce the bug, I definitely would like to know and I would like to collect Event Log files.

I was replying to the person who said that the pressure sensitivity on the
tablet stopped working, not the topic of this thread. I'm well aware this
thread's topic is an PS issue. Apologies to those who may have been
confused by my reply.

The pressure sensitivity thing is (if you're using Wacom) is a services thing, a restart of the Wacom service and away it goes again.

One thing I have noticed though (only noticed it the other day), and this only applies when using either my 24" Cintiq Pro (home, desktop) or my Intuos 5 Medium (work, laptop, different driver versions between both), the mouse works fine (albiet with a bit of lag) is altering points on a curves adjustment layer. It won't do it with the Wacom devices, move point, nada, doesn't even show, move the cursor off the properties panel and the point appears on the curve and is moveable but I have to do this for every point on there which isn't ideal.

@CJButler That's good to hear there's progress being made. I'm not on beta but look forward to the next release.

With quick testing the sticky mouse button problem doesn't seem to occur in the latest Beta version. Awesome!

I've been using the latest betas for weeks now — ever since the release of 25.5, because that version is unusable — and I haven't been experiencing any "sticking" issues so far.

Awesome. Sounds promising! Again, addressing this should be top priority.  If there is a fix in the latest Beta then fast-track a patch!

@CJButler seems a couple of beta users are seeing an improvement. For the technically-minded, can you summarise (at a high level) what the code change(s) is that might have cured this?

I want many people to test the beta version.
I'm willing to test the beta too, but I'm so behind in work right now.
I'm looking forward to your reviews.

What the heck?

I was using Photoshop 24.2.0 without any problems.

Today I updated from Lightroom Classic 12.5 the newest Version of Lightroom Classic (13.2) and got the issue with the sticky handtool in PHOTOSHOP, without updating the 24.2.0 version!?

So I downgraded Lightroom to the recent installed Version 12.5, tested Photoshop (still 24.2.0)... and the bug is gone!

That convinces me, it's an Adobe comprehensive ecosystem problem with th drivers, which are used for Photoshop and Lightroom as well.

SO WEIRD!

@Jqqerry  Not any more detailed, no.

I switched to panic mode and revered to prior state 😉

But here the Versions:

Lightroom Classic 12.5 <-> Photoshop 24.2.0: No issue with sticky hand

Upgraded to Lightroom Classic 13.2 <-> Photoshop 24.2.0: Immediate issue with sticky hand in Photoshop

Downgraded back to  Lightroom Classic 12.5 <-> Photoshop 24.2.0: Issue with sticky hand gone.

That makes me conclude, that (at least) Lightroom Classic and Photoshop are using some common drivers/files/configuration files, which are changed, when updating one of the two applications.

@Goyko

I haven't used Lightroom for so long that I can't remember it properly. But if I remember correctly, Lightroom and Adobe Camera RAW could have shared something like a common preset? (Maybe not. The memory is too old.)

It sounds very strange. I think that's the story that leads to experiences where some users reset their preferences and said the stickiness disappeared.
We suspected it was a matter of preference, but we didn't know exactly which one, so based on your experience, it would be nice for developers to track this down.
What else do light rooms and photoshop have in common?

@Goyko Also, which mouse do you use? Do you use a tablet? (Wacom? Hunion?), is the graphics card Nvidia?
I'm not criticizing and criticizing, I'm asking politely. I have an expectation that your experience is the key point to solve our old problems.

@CJButler Can you do a research based on this user's experience? Of course, we've seen improvements in beta.
But this user's experience seems very special.

--------------------------------------------------

When I use a tablet, I use Wacom Intuos Pro M

Atm I don't have it connected, but drivers installed.

The photoshop issue is on different computers... desktop (self build AMD) and laptop (Lenovo, no table drivers installed).

I am totally convinced, that there is no connection regarding the different systems.

Since today I am sure it's something with shared libraries of Adobe products, as my Lightroom Classic experience shows.

@chrisell99  >> can you summarise (at a high level) what the code change(s) is that might have cured this?

Two things changed:

(1) We now call the Windows OS function "EnableMouseInPointer(false)" on start-up. This is the correct behavior for legacy apps like Photoshop, where the majority of event handling assumes a mouse (like.the Hand Tool tracker), even when working with pointer devices. We were not calling it at all before this. This function was created by Microsft when they started supporting pointing devices: it has the unfortunate property that anyone can set it at any time - and fix the behavior for the session. We were not calling it, but that did not prevent any of the multitude of embedded 3rd party technology within Photoshop from calling it. E.g. Chrome libraries. Through experimentation we know that when set to "true", bad behavior in Photoshop follows. My theory is that there is some startup sequeunce (or later gesture) that traverses some of our 3rd party libraries, causing this to be set to "true" consistently for some users. I don't know where that might be. We've looked for the culprit, but have not found it since we have had such a difficult time reproducing the behavior and much of the source code for such libraries is not visible to us. In any case, the setting is now established correctly at Photoshop launch.

(2) We have changed how we interact with the Windows OS function PeekEvent in certain locations, especially when dealing with Mouse events and Trackers. When the Windows event queue gets busy, this function is capable of behaviors contrary to the expectations of the original developer who called PeekEvent. Photoshop uses PeekEvent throughout the code base, and has done so literally for decades. But it does have non-intutive behaviors under some circumstances.

As mentioned earflier, we're not done with scrutinizing our PeekEvent calls. We still have a known problem with Pointer (Pen) events,  especially when when the Windows event queue gets busy. We're working on that.

@Jqqerry >> Can you do a research based on this user's experience?

I'm sorry, I don't understand what you are asking.

If it is because he is seeing problems in 24.2, then that is not suprising given what we now know. We have had reports of lost mouse-up behavior going back to 23.2, and possibly earlier, but very rarely. As @Goyko suspects, there is are other bits of shared technology that get updated through triggers other than a Photoshop update. For example, a Lightroom update will also update Camera Raw, which Photoshop uses.  I am very sure there are other such things. But even if you asked me, I could not enumerate them all.

Same issue. You would think this could have been reproduced and resolved in the last 9 months since the original post.

The application locks on the hand tool when using the Spacebar shortcut. I have to click to release, then got back to the shortcut, or use the Esc key to release then, go back to the shortcut.

For those on a Mac - try this.

While the hand tool is sticking - open the Keyboard Viewer in Mac OS.

https://support.apple.com/en-in/guide/mac-help/mchlp1015/14.0/mac/14.0

Then click the space bar (with the cursor - don't use physical space bar) in the virtual keyboard a bunch of times.

The hand tool releases.

This resolved the issue for us on several Macs - seems to be a lag/stall in the input for the keyboard.

As someone who's had this issue for a long time myself, I got the update to 25.6.0 yesterday.

For one I reinstalled a plugin and then the PS update happened the same day. It might be connected, but PS decided to reset it's whole preferences.

For what it's worth though, I can't specifically say it's the reset or the update (I've had reset tries before though without effect). But I didn't encounter this error throughout the rest of the day! So fingers crossed it's finally fixed for good with 25.6? 🙂

This has been an issue for many users for the last few updates of Photoshop. It's unfortuantely nothing new. But holy hell I need this fixed because it's making the program borderline unusable.

And also unfortunately, it's only one of far too many bugs needing fixing.
Adobe, you need some healthy competition because the way these programs are handled is inexcusable.

We deployed several underlying changes in 25.6 that were designed to help address this issue, specifically for mouse, so there may still be some cases where stylus fails but we're working on those as well.
If you aren't seeing this anymore with 25.6, please confirm.
It has not been easy or straight forward to fix this and know how frustrating this has been.
We REALLY appreciate your patience on this.
