P: Program error when saving, lag when zooming, changes not reflecting in document window (macOS)

LEGEND ,
Dec 09, 2020 Dec 09, 2020

Since the 22.1 update, MAJOR bugs:

- ‘could not save because of a program error’ when saving, work around: hiding a few layers or folders.

- major lag when zooming in

- actions and changes delay in showing, to the point where they never show up - once I close the document and quit Photoshop and go back in the changes are  visible.

what’s going on??

Please install 22.1.1 which was released late last night. It contains a fix for program errors.

Reposting this from *ishal ismail, which solved the problem for me. Many thanks, Ishal!

Here is my fix, I'm on macOS Catalina V10.15.6, PS V22. I gave PS Full Disk Access and restarted the system, seems like it has fixed the problem for now.

You can go to System preferences > Security & Privacy > Full Disk Access ( You can find it on the left side pane > and add PS to the list by pressing the small + icon you can find on the bottom of the left-side pane.

Also, you need to unlock the pri

Everything goes fine with editing an creating my files. BUT as soon as I create a cliupoping mask on a folder (with brightness/contrast effect) then I can't save anymore. I get this message 😞

- Could not complete your request because of a program error

Tried to google the problem and tried different settings but nothing helps. Tried making a new file to see if the file was corrupt but again failed. I have the latest photoshop. All is up to date. Working on mac osx catalina 10.15.7

Hope someone knows a fix.

UPDATE: So I tried once again. Closed the file. Opened it again. Dragged the three items out of the folder. Saved it. Went fine. Then created a new folder. Dragged the items in there. Saved it. Went fine. Then added brightnes/contrast layer. Saved... fine. Then applied Clipping mask to the folder and this is where it always goes wrong. Can't save anymore.

Luckily for some reason now it did work BUT it's just waiting for this to happen again as this is not the first time it happened! Creating clipping masks on items/folders gave me this problem many times before and it's bound to happen again!!

Try hiding all layers, or all layers but the background layer, and resaving. It worked for me.

I've had it explained to me that my graphics card is not up to the new version of Photoshop 22.1.0 - have been experiencing issues and lost work over the last two days which won't copy or save, and Photoshop was not shutting down properly.   I have now de-installed and gone back to an old version.  This is so unsatisfactory and irritating - I'm sure I won't be given a discount because of this.  To be told it's because of old technology.  Adobe needs to get with the audience, not everyone is big business all bells and whistles.  I'm a student and then will be a new designer starting out.  How are we supposed to access the tools if they exclude lower incomes so drastically?  There is no mechanism to feed this back to Adobe - a customer support phone number that will just cause more stress after 2 days of it.  Clearly I'm not very happy!

When I try to “Merge Down” two layers I get an error that says “Could not complete your request because of a program error.”

This was working just fine a few days ago.

For me it went so far as I was unable to save as a multilayered file I just had opened without any modification.

Reverting to 22.0.1 seems to have resolved that issue.

I really hope all those issues can be fixed soon, they make Photoshop totally unusable.

By far the worst update of my long turbulent love story with Photoshop (user since version 5)

I suspect the agent was confusing the program error you were seeing with different issue caused by the GPU.

If you restore your preferences using this manual method does it work correctly?

https://helpx.adobe.com/photoshop/using/preferences.html#Manually

If that doesn't solve it, you can quit Photoshop and put the Settings folder back.

SAME issue- can't save anything new; and for such an EXPENSIVE Program to not be functioning properly and to have to leap through hoops to trouble shoot it and still not have it working is REALLY NOT OK

NEVER had these issues when we had Disk versions and could download it directly into the computer without all these auto-update garbage bugs happening while trying to work on something;

ARE YOU CREDITING OUR ACCOUNTS FOR THESE ISSUES? the amount of $ we pay for an entire suite to get this one program and its not even working properly = SERIOUSLY NOT OK.

I've uninstalled-reinstalled-hopped through hoops and it is still not saving due to 'program' errors- and its a lot of MY valuable time being wasted here to make and remake something that then can't save!? ABSOLUTELY not ok- if you know this is an issue effecting this many people you should have rolled back the latest update automatically on all versions to the one where things actually -worked-  here I am clicking different versions trying to find one that will let me save anything!

it is extremely frustrating

I had a chat with one of Adobe's arrogant service reps and he sent me a link that had me try to enable "Full Disk Access" and the Hide All Layers work arounds, neither of these worked. The third option did work and that was to disable the Discover panel.

  • Quit Photoshop
  • Navigate to the following location:
  • On macOS: navigate to "/Applications/Adobe Photoshop 2021/Adobe Photoshop 2021.app/Contents/Required/UXP/"
  • On Windows: navigate to "~\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe Photoshop 2021\Required\UXP\"
  • Rename the "com.adobe.unifiedpanel" folder to "~com.adobe.unifiedpanel"

Restart Photoshop and it should work now.

@JeffreyTranberry I would love to be added to special build list.

Do we know how far back for versions we need to go to have this not cause issues? Eg 22.0.1 vs 21.2.4

I have a set of CR2 photos that I have pieces of 2-4 added to the last. It saves fine for X amount of time with me manually saving it every few minutes. But as soon as I notice it having trouble zooming or scrolling I can't save unless I turn off all but the background layer. This particular time had 5 layers, earlier tonight had 3 layers.

I'm using Windows 10 Pro on a rather new Precision with a Xeon and a Quadro. A support chat person said the workaround was to disable 'Use Graphics Processor' which basically makes photoshop non usable with large photos.

I'm working on some PSD's in Photoshop 2021 which are around 200MB (so not big at all) and 90% of the time I try to save or export my PSD, I can't save it because of a program error. I've restarted my laptop and Photoshop a several times and changed the work station, but it doesn't change anything. I've also took a loot multiple trouble shooting blogs here at Adobe, but nothing seems to help. This is really frustrating since I have a deadline and I can't get any further at this moment.

it look like that has something to do with smart objects which are lager than the work surface. if i remove the information outside the work surface in the smart object. if i delete the pixels out of the work surface of the smart object, i reduce the smart object to a layer in the psd or i set the the bit mode from 8 to 16 bit i could safe the psd..

but with the typical setting of 8 bit with wrapped smart objects (which are bigger than the work surface of the smart object and not background reduced i get the error "couldn't save because of program error".

my system: win10 20h2 with a amd 5800x and a nvidia rtx 2060s
