P: Program error when saving, lag when zooming, changes not reflecting in document window (macOS)

LEGEND ,
Dec 09, 2020 Dec 09, 2020

Since the 22.1 update, MAJOR bugs:

- ‘could not save because of a program error’ when saving, work around: hiding a few layers or folders.

- major lag when zooming in

- actions and changes delay in showing, to the point where they never show up - once I close the document and quit Photoshop and go back in the changes are  visible.

what’s going on??

Please install 22.1.1 which was released late last night. It contains a fix for program errors.

Reposting this from *ishal ismail, which solved the problem for me. Many thanks, Ishal!

Here is my fix, I'm on macOS Catalina V10.15.6, PS V22. I gave PS Full Disk Access and restarted the system, seems like it has fixed the problem for now.

You can go to System preferences > Security & Privacy > Full Disk Access ( You can find it on the left side pane > and add PS to the list by pressing the small + icon you can find on the bottom of the left-side pane.

Also, you need to unlock the pri

I will participate.  I have several problematic files that I have been experimenting with and could easily use them to test a new version.

same problem here, quite frustrating, solutions offered by support are not working short of reverting to a prior v of PS!?

Workarounds worked briefly, but now PS 2021 simply crashes. The only thing that works for me is reverting to PS 2020. Am on a Mac, running latest OS (Big Sur) with latest update.

I am also having these exact same issues, which was a totally frustrating situation. I would like to be a part of any fix or pre-release that will help with the remedy of this bug or whatever it is. I have been using photoshohp for 9 years now and this is a big let down. I use a PC running windows ten and photoshop 22.1

@JeffreyTranberry For some weird reason I am only having these problems when using the 8bit channel. If I use the 16bit channel everything seems to work okay for me. Hope this helps you figure out the problem, and thank you for trying to find a solution.

I am getting this message for a project I created last night. Worked on it for hours ! I'm in Photoshop daily and have never encountered until last night. I went into my Mac security and privacy settings and added Photoshop, I've attempted to save to a dozen other locations on my MacBook. And to make matters worse, this morning when when I attempt to merge layers, select images, or copy layers, the same message is popping up which has rendered my Photoshop App completely useless. What do I do? Have I lost an entire evening of work ?

Since a few weeks ago, i have been having major issues with photoshop (2021)
before then i have been using it for about 2 years with no issues whatsoever.
to start with, every now an again, it would come up with an "could not save *file name* because of program error" and not let me save my file, making me lose alot of artwork. I tried multiple things to fix this issue, but nothing has really changed. Earlier today a white line appeared at the top of my canvas/workspace and although it was pretty irritating, it wasn't causing any big issues, however after trying to draw for about 10 minutes, more lines have appeared and make it really hard to draw. it eventually got so glitchy everytime i zoomed in and out, that the program is practically unusable for longer than 5 or 10 minutes.
If there is any solution to this, please let me know!

I'm having the same issue. Running Windows 10 - I can save the file if I hide all layers, but as soon as any layers other than the background are visible, I get the program error message when trying to save (in .psd or .jpeg formats). I can't flatten or merge layers either - I just keep getting the error message.

I reverted to version 22.0.1 - and that seems to have fixed the issue for now. Will definitely be waiting for further information to ensure the bug is fixed before upgrading.

Hey all. I was just wondering if the program save error which I've been having since the last update for Photoshop is due to the dpi of the image layers? I work with DAZ and usually up dpi to about 400 dpi a 96 dpi DAZ render. After the last update I've had nothing but problems with multiple png layers after draging them across from another opened file. I had an image that was saving properly but, I made a modification re-render, as soon as I put that layer in to the older version, it would not save. This just something that struck me as a possiblity for these errors in saving. A mis-match in individual layer dpi resolutions?

Merry Christmas Everyone!

I am having the same program errors every time I try and update my work. I am using Windows and I cannot get past a certain point in a build. Thanks in advance.

I updated to the latest Photoshop (V 22.1) and have an automation I run for one of the companies I work for to customize our photos. Where as the older version used to crash on me mid-way through, I'm now getting random program errors that won't allow me to save or export my designs.

This only happens some of the time and there's no discernable reason why one image works through the whole automation and the other doesn't.

At the very least "program error" should be expanded upon to help diagnose what's wrong so that if it's a file issue (missing asset/sizing/etc) that I can go in and adjust it.

@JeffreyTranberry I cannot save any image with a transparent background, or with the background layer hidden. I create a brand new image, add a text layer, an ellipse with a gradient with transparency, and hide the white background layer (or just delete the background layer) and I can't save.  If the background layer is not hidden and not transparent, it saves just fine.  I can delete the background layer completely, and it won't save. I can add another layer at the bottom that is solid, and it will save again.

Was able to save after cloning a background layer and merging my imported and cut image on that. Tried to save it by closing one layer after another, and the image that was imported, edited and cut to shape seemed to cause the problem.

The program can't keep up with simple brush fills. Using program to color line artwork. Program will not allow zoom in or outs. Unable to save 'due to program error'.
