How can we preserve the selection while we create multiple "Fill or Adjustment Layers"?

I'm trying to figure out something.

Let's say I have a picture of a chef in a kitchen

Let's say I make a selection. (Let's say I choose "Select" > "Subject".) Adobe Photoshop intelligently selects the chef -- hat, apron and all!

In a hands-on tutorial, I remember that I choose "Create New Fill or Adjustment Layer" (found in the lower left of the screen). We must then choose which layer (for example,  Levels, or Curves, or Hue/Saturation).

I choose Levels, and then make the edits on the Levels layer.

Now if I click the “Create New Fill or Adjustment Layer”, the selection (of the subject -- the chef) is gone! Must I do “Select” > “Subject” again?

Is there a way to keep the selection while creating new fill or adjustment layers?

A few methods -

Old School:

Go to Select Menu and Save Selection...

That will create a channel you can then reload the selection as much as you want.

Better way:

Your Adjustment layer creates a layer mask. Opt+Drag to mask to your new layers and it will ask if you want to replace.

You can duplicate that mask as much as you want.

Best way:

Use clipping masks (hold Opt and click between layers) to root everything to your first adjustment layer mask. Everything clipped will honor the original mask/selection. This way if you edit the original mask for any reason, all clipped layers will change with it!
