Still to check it out but will keep you posted.

Thanks again for all the inputs!

Good luck, you'll never look back.

Try it out, and don't hesitate to ask if you have any questions.

    Dave, Mike, D F,

Many thanks for the feedback / inputs...

DF - Tempted by the i1. Unfortunately that costs about $310 here.... But maybe, fingers crossed... after all, the price diff is only a month's supply of vodka .

Price diff between the Spyder5Pro ($220) and Spyder5Express is only about $25 (which puts the Express bang on budget). The ColorMunki is $228. (Prices roughly converted to US$ and obviously higher here!)

    ColorMunki Smile is $131.

    Teeth gritting time!

Mike - Saw the video... the main diff. - in terms of profile - seems to be less contrast in the Munki profile. So, better for press-print.  (But he was using the Spyder4).The next video on was also pretty good and more succinct : Best tools for calibrating colors of your monitor - YouTube . But doesn't seem to offer much recommendation!

Will let you know what I finally decide. Meanwhile, many thanks.

    Cheers...

I or none of my clients ever had more than one at the same time to compare results against another. We did though use the Color Munki to calibrate 2 cellphones the results greatly improved an iPhone & Samsung to be an acceptable match. Do not know of any others being able to do that or the calibrator to be able to fit over the screen so perfectly.

If calibrating multiple monitors is important to you, D Fosse brings up an important point that the  Pro or Express will not do that.  To me datatcolor's  chart below can be deceiving to the average reader, but you actually need Studio Match Assistant to do that as shown in this video.

Both the ones Dave mentioned are great and also the Spyder5Express

I would not recommend the Spyder Express. It is limited to a single screen - if you try to use it with a second screen it will overwrite the previous profile. There's no way to "trick" it into writing two profiles (many have tried).

It also has severely limited software with very few user settings for white point etc.

I have tried and used a number of Spyder sensors in my time. Most of them have been excellent - except those coming from Express packages. I strongly suspect that the sensors that don't meet manufacturing tolerances are "dumped" in the inexpensive Express range.

Note that none of this applies to Pro or Elite, both of which should be fine in all respects.

Do yourself a favor and throw in an extra $45. B+H lists the i1 Display Pro at $245.

You won't regret it. The i1 is the best mainstream sensor on the market (excluding more specialist solutions), using dichroic glass filters that don't fade, and a construction that minimizes ambient light influence.

An additional benefit is that it's supported in all other calibration software under the sun, also the high-end ones. For instance, I'm using it with Eizo ColorNavigator.

The ColorMunki Photo is about $100 less. It's basically the same sensor, but crippled in a lot of ways and without the universal support of its big brother.

    Hi

The X-Rite  i1 Display or  the X-rite Color Munki should both do the job
