Masking; brushing black to hide mask and white to show in Photoshop

I am asking for help with a masking question using the latest Photoshop.

I place one image over another and I create a layer mask for the second image that I want to use as a foreground. I can brush away parts of the "masked" image to eliminate background portions that I do not want. However, if I brush too much and try to unhide a portion of the image previously hidden by the black brush by brushing with a white brush, nothing happens. The portions of the layer previously hidden stay hidden.

How can I make the white brush effective to unhide  the hiddne [parts of the mask?

Thanks for any support.

Thanks for your response. I have found the solution to the issue. It comes under the heading of operator lack of knowledge. When the brush tool is selected, a "mode" choice is available at the top of the screen. For some reason, an incorrect mode came up by default. When I changed the mode to normal, the problem resolved itself.

There is not enough time in my lifetime to learn all of Photoshop, but I'll keep trying.

Hi there,

That shouldn't be happening, as Black Hides and White Reveals when working with Layer masks.
Could you please check if you have the Mask layer selected in the Layers panel?

Also, would you mind sharing a screenshot of Photoshop's user interface with the layers pabel visible?

Regards,
Sahil
