RAW editor closes if I "open" one of many images. How to keep it open?

I open several photos in the RAW editor (these are .CR2 files from a Canon camera). I edit one, save it as a .dng file. Then I click the Open button in the lower right corner. That photo opens in the Photoshop editor but then the RAW editor window closes, losing all of those files I had open. No work is lost except that I had selected which ones I wanted to open, and now they are no longer open. I have to start over again to select the ones I need to edit.

Is there any way to keep the RAW editor open and go back and forth between that and the Photoshop window?

The workflow is really to work on all the files that you open, then open the ones you want. You can do as Berry suggested as saving to a DNG, but best just to open edit the all, then open.

Yes, that is the workaround I am using. It's not ideal for the way I would prefer to work, but it works. I was just wondering if there was something I was missing that would allow the RAW editor to stay open.

No, I don't think there is.

Do you get all your selected images as filmstrip in ACR? If you do (and select them all), ACR should remain open after a save, and you can still open them. But once opened, ACR has done what it's there for, and will close.

If you don't get the filmstrip, look for the icon to show filmstrip in the bottom left corner.

That said - this sounds a bit elaborate. Easier to bulk convert to DNG in Bridge, and then open in ACR. Save shouldn't be necessary.

Saving is not the issue. If I click Open to open them in the regular Photoshop window (so I can edit and save as JPG) then the ACR window closes. The ACR filmstrip is volatile so if I want to go back I have to start again to select the images I want to open

Instead of opening the file I would suggest SAVING the file. On the file selected, click on the three dots, choose SAVE Image. It brings up the save dialog. Once completed, the interface goes back to Camera Raw for further editing.

When you are done editing and saving files, close Camera Raw and open the saved files for further editing in Photoshop.
