Trouble with timeline control (timeline range shown)

I cannot seem to change range of time shown on the timeline screen. It always shows the entire video. The zoom control does not seem to change the time range shown. Is there a setting to allow adjustment of the timeline zoom.

The slider is working but their is no affect on the time range displayed on the screen. Please see the word document showing the screen with two different zoom settings.

I am sorry for what I am sure will be a simple question.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

The "+" key and the "-" key enlarge and shrink the view of the timeline. The "\" will fit the entire project in the visible range. If enlarged, the slider bar at the top moves to where you want to work. Do you need a screen shot?
