BMD Desktop Video causing Premiere Pro to Freeze Playback

Community Beginner ,
Nov 14, 2023 Nov 14, 2023
In my facility we have a number of PCs that are running Premiere 2024 and Black Magic desktop 12.7.1. We have been encountering a bug that only happens when transmit is enabled. With transmit enabled, Premiere will randomly, yet consistently, stop playing video in the program monitor, view and external display.  We can move clips around, drag the play head, but no video will update. The only way to get video to play again is to reboot Premiere.
Premiere Pro 24.0.0
BMD Desktop Video 12.7.1
Microsoft Windows 11 Pro
HP Z4 G4 Workstation
i9-10900X CPU @ 3.70GHz, 3696 Mhz, 10 Core(s)
Installed Physical Memory (RAM) 128 GB
NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3080 Ti

I went back to 23.5 and it has been perfectly stable. I was able to convert a new project to an older version using this program, it worked great and is something Adobe should offer to the community.

Hey folks,  just wanted to let you know where we are with this.  We have two different repro's in house at the moment.  On older hardware, we can repro pretty much as described above.  On newer hardware we can still get a freeze, but it is recoverable, and restarting PPro is not required.  In both cases it appears to have something to do with the timming of starting playback after an edit is made as Jeff described.  So far I can't repro this if I take a beat before I trigger playback.  Not a very good workaround I know, but I am curious if others experiece the same result.  We are currently having the engineers looking at this and will update when we find out more, but any new data will of course be helpful.

I had my first freeze in 23.5 yesterday since switching back. I had a mp4 clip fro a gopro with the speed at 400%. Playback froze while scrubbing the clip. I was looking for sections to trim out by using the mouse to scrub the sequence, use the keyboard to set an in point and an out point, then use the the extract keyboard command. Doing all this quickly.

I edit almost everyday and this was the first freeze in two weeks after switching back to 23.5

We have the same issues with a different setup (aja Kona IP, adobe 23.6.2), might I ask for a case number so that I can share this with our case engineer, this might help speed up the process.

Just to chime in. This is not only isolated to BMD cards. We're running AJA Lhi PCie output cards in our workstations, and it's also hapenning when Mercury playback is enabled through it.
It does not happen when Mercury transmit is enabled through GPU output.

Hi Lukas,

It does not happen when Mercury transmit is enabled through GPU output.

Do you mean that it does not happen, when you use PPro's transmit functionality, without involving BMD or AJA transmit plugins?

Hi Bruce,

That's precisely correct.

I am experiencing the same problem on different PCs, HPZ840 Dual Xeon with Quadro M4000 and Avid DNXIO (which is built by Blackmagic) and a newer i9 with a Radeon w5700 using Decklink Extreme. Totally different Setups, but same Freezing Error via SDI Output after editing a few minutes.

For me disabling CUDA (or OpenCl on the Radeon) helped to work with a stable SDI Output via the Blackmagic Hardware. Of course it is a terrible workaround to work without GPU Support, but at least it is possible to work with a powerful CPU.

Adobe, please fix this immediately!

Confirming: Switching to software only in PPro, makes the problem go away for you?

Yes, thats correct. I have edited the whole day without freezes after I switched the Playback Engine to "Software only", SDI output was stable.

We're working with Blackmagic, on finding a resolution; nothing to report yet.

As previously stated, we will keep this thread informed of any progress.

Does anyone have anything to report on this from trying 24.2?

Early testing from my side, it looks like it has been "solved" no mention of it in fixed issues or known issues.

It's too early to confirm it has been offcially solved, but it looks promising.

The machine we're testing it on, hasn't had a frozen playback as of yet in the last 48 hours. The setup we're testing it on is using a blackmagic decklink mini monitor.

I've also tested in our VM environment using AJA KONA IP, altough I got a lot of other issues with 24.2 in this environment, i couldnt reproduce the playback issue.

Im carefully optimistic.

- No more judder/stuttering/fluidity issues our of the decklink

But I now have the audio drop out issue, 😭

I didn't know there are issues with the 24 and updated yesterday. It's been a nightmare.

* Production Monitor freezes within 5 edits.

* Takes a good 5 mins for the clip thumbnails to show up after each restart. It's only a 90s video.

* Export gets stuck at various percentages until Premiere Pro stops respondong....and need to force quit. I notice it got stuck at audio render quite ofte, but don't have a clue what is happening.

I've been sending resport back each time this happened and troubleshooting with the app, which did not help much besides saying doing a preference reset and upgrate to the latest version?! Help please! This is ridiculous.

You're posting in a thread about BMD problems, but your post doesn't mention using a BMD device; are you?

If so, what device and what driver version? Do the problems stop, if you disable the BMD transmit device?

I'm still getting the frozen output as well in 24.5.0 A year ago I gave up and switched back to 23.5, but decided to give 24 another shot on a new project. It will freeze consistantly if I have a fast speed/duration effect applied and I jump around the screen to quickly trimming clips.

I'm using a BM Decklink mini monitor 4K 12.7.1
