Issues with Premiere 23.5 on M2 Ultra Studio

I have been using premiere for over 15 years now. I have never experinanced such a buggy version. Ever since I got the MAC STUDIO M2 Ultra, Premiere has been nothing short of a nightmare. From issues of editing with two monitors, two video not being played on the timeline. Massive lagging. Not able to render anything. Someone FIX this version. Come out with an update already.

Just in case anyone has the same issue I was having, found out the root cause was the Sony Catalyst Prepare plugin which was the cause of all my woes. After removing the plugin, Premiere is behaving normally. Shout out to Kyle P. for helping me isolate the issue.

Oh, I should have included that I'm on a M2 Ultra, 24 Core, 128GB memory, 60 core gpu, with three external 4K monitors plugged in.

Kyle, that worked for me!  I had tried every other tweak / fix / work around that I could think of, and the only one that had worked previously is when I went down to a 1 screen set up.  Keeping "Displays have seperate spaces" selected fixed the playback issue for me with all 3 monitors still plugged in.  I never would have thought of that.  I've used multiple desktop spaces for editing for many years, and it's always made sense to have them change in unison:  Often editing software like Premiere benefits from the additional real estate, so I would keep my bins in one screen, then timeline and monitors on the other.  Keeping "displays have seperate spaces" enabled almost defeats the purpose of having multiple screens, as then your only swapping spaces on one monitor instead of all.  Anyway, thank you for the work around!

Kyle Plumadore

I identified a number of irregularities in the way Premiere Pro interacts with macos spaces in January.

I got no responses or feedback from Adobe on that.

I have a quick update for anyone experiencing poor playback performance on M2 Mac Studio Multi-display setups.

We've identified an issue where disabling the MacOS system setting "Displays have separate Spaces" under "Desktop & Dock" degrades playback performance. By default this setting is enabled.

We're still working on an official resolution but in the meantime you can try re-enabling that setting as a workaround (requires system reboot to take effect)

Let me know if you had that setting disabled, and whether re-enabling it helps.

Note: If you're experiencing poor playback performance on a configuration that is not specifically a M2 Mac Studio with multiple displays, it's almost certainly a different issue than the primary one being raised in this thread and I'd encourage you to create a new thread/topic with the specifics of your setup.

It's not just with M2 based systems. My Ryzen based PC was fine until 23.4 and now the lag is absolutely atrocious. It's genuinely impossible to use.

Thanks to everyone who provided traces. We're still parsing through some of the traces. If anyone would like to contribute theirs, I can add them to the queue (plumador@adobe.com

A handful of traces point to a playback performance bug that occurs specifically with multi-display configurations + M2 Ultra. We can see this clearly in the traces, but we don't yet have the root cause. It does not appear to be due to system load.

Most users experiencing this have reported that shrinking or maximizing the application window or stretching it across displays works around the bug for now.

As far as we have seen, this bug is limited to multi-display configurations. If you experience poor performance even with a single display setup, it's likely to be a separate issue than many of the reports we've recieved. Feel free to email your trace anyway, or to create a new Community Support bug report.

I'll provide another update here as soon as I have more info to share.

I have sent my ktrace to kyle too. Waiting since then.

But news from the testfront: iit's clear: the longer and larger (HDvs4k) the clips, the bigger the cpu percentage (up to 2000%) and thus the performance problems up to the lack of any reaction when hitting play for 10 seconds or leaving out 20of25 frames (no kidding!).

BUT: I have also noticed, that it works with a brand new, smaller project. I haven't cut anything yet (the other project has an allmost ready to export 90minute timeline), just consolidated/synced the shooting days (2 cams and external audio) in sequences. And with these Premiere is using under 100% and behaves well.

And: I am using PrP 23.4
