Performance Issues with Growing Files and Large Productions, Seeking Recommendation

Community Beginner ,
May 28, 2025 May 28, 2025

Hi everyone,

We’re currently evaluating newer versions of Premiere Pro for use in a high-demand production environment, and we’re running into major performance issues with the latest builds — specifically versions 24.5 and 24.6.

In our workflows, we deal with large-scale productions, multiple nested projects, and growing files that are actively being written to disk while in use. This worked quite well under version 23.6, where we had minimal to no slowdowns or stutter during playback, timeline interaction, or project switching.

However, with both 24.5 and 24.6, the experience has become nearly unworkable. Interface responsiveness drops significantly, timeline scrubbing becomes laggy, and working with growing files causes serious performance degradation. It’s gotten to the point where we’re unsure which version we can safely rely on going forward.

We’re hoping to get some guidance from the community or from the Adobe team:

  • Which currently supported version is best suited for handling large projects and live ingest (growing file) workflows?

  • Are there known regressions in performance for these scenarios in 24.5/24.6?

  • Any configurations or preferences we should look into tweaking to optimize performance?

System specs for our edit sets are included below for reference.

Looking forward to your insights — any help or confirmation would be appreciated!

Thanks in advance

Card: NVIDIA RTX A4000
Processor: 12th Gen Intel(R) Core(TM) i9-12900K
RAM: 64gb (of which 36 is reserverd for Adobe Premiere Pro)

Hi @Fearless_world5597 -
Thanks for submitting your bug report. We need a few more details to try to help with the issue.

Our current LTS version of Premiere Pro is 24.6.5

What driver are you using with your Nvidia A4000?

Have you tried the latest Premiere Pro version currently 25.2.3?

Can you describe your workflow a bit more:

What type of storage are these files on?

  • The playhead is sluggish.

    • Problem: The blue line indicating your position in the video (the 'playhead') can sometimes move jerkily.
    • Solution: If this occurs, you can temporarily hide the 'Audio Clip Mixer' and 'Audio Track Mixer' panels. Do this by dragging another panel, such as 'Effects' or 'Production', over them. Most of our Editors prefer to see these, however. Any other way?
  • The right screen disappears when exporting.

    • Problem: When exporting your video, the right screen in Premiere Pro can sometimes vanish.
    • Cause: This is caused by something called 'Dead pixels', I think.
    • Solution: Slightly reduce the size of Premiere's right screen so it doesn't touch the edges of your monitor. This resolves the issue. Is there another way?
  • Media Encoder does not work on 'Edit 5'.

    • Problem: On the 'Edit 5' computer, you cannot directly export videos via Media Encoder.
    • Solution: You can manually open 'Media Encoder 25' and then drag your timelines to the Media Encoder's 'Watchfolder'. We'd prefer to use Media Encoder 24.6.4, however.

I've copied above from an internal Support Ticket of our own.
Since we're a Live Broadcast company, we're 1 version behind.
We use Premiere Pro 24.6.4, and use Media Encoder 24.6.4 in all Edit Sets, except for one (Edit 5).
All Edit Sets are identical to one another in terms of hardware and software.
We work mostly with Growing Files (MXF, live football games for example) which are quite large and heavy. We acces those files via EditShare.

      O.S: Windows 11 10.0 26100
      Syst Manufacturer: Dell
      Syst Model: Precision 3660
      BIOS: 2.23.0
      Processor: 12th Gen Intel Core i9-12900K, 24CPUs
      Memory: 64GB

If there are any more questions, please let me know. I'd like to get these problems fixed permanently without the workarounds, if possible.

The right screen disappears when exporting - This is a known issue with multi monitor setups.  I'm glad you have found the solution from our forum.

Media Encoder does not work - I haven't seen this issue, can you provide your reproducible steps and let us know exactly what you are seeing?
Sorry for the frustration.

Your post is unclear on one key bit ... is your production "large", or, are you using Premiere's Production mode?

If not, you  should be for large projects. As it is designed to better handle things like this.

If you are, then you should not be getting this behavior. And something needs sorting for certain.

Hi Jamie,

Thanks for the reply.
I read that 24.6.4 was the LTS version, but I read wrong, then!
I'll test 24.6.5 sometime soon as well, just to be sure. Thanks.

We do have 1 external plugin installed, 'Framelight X Panel' which is made by a company called Ampp. That extension is made specifically for Version 23.
We don't use it, however. I was told it was uninstalled but I still see it under 'Extensions'.
I'll also try to uninstall it completely and see what that does.

I'm sorry, I wasn't clear about the Media Encoder issue.
We can queue the timelines into Media Encoder, but the Media Encoder doesn't see the EditShare drives, where our MXF files and all graphics are from. So we'd get 1 big "Media Offline" file if we'd export that. Our IT guys also looked into it, but alas.
If you want, I could make a screenrecording of it?
Also note, this problem only exists in Media Encoder 24. Media Encoder 23 AND 25 CAN read the EditShare drives.

Our Audio Hardware Settings are set to "Asio" and then to the connected Merging Audio Device. MME doesn't work for us, because we also need to connect to Voice Booths and such. I'd need to ask about the connections and such if it'd help, so please let me know.

Thanks for the quick reply and offered help!

I was just notified by my colleague that he also filled in a bug report under which you replied!
This one: https://community.adobe.com/t5/premiere-pro-bugs/performance-issues-with-growing-files-and-large-pro...

Slight miscommunication on our part.
Do I need to close one for total clarity?

Hi @Fearless_world5597 - Thanks for letting us know about the other thread, I can merge these posts.  I'd be curious to know if your playhead sluggishness goes away with the MIME setting and no input just to test.  What driver and external device are you using for Asio Audio?

I haven't seen the issue of media encoder not connecting to external storage before.  Do you see the editshare in the network Drives in the media browser?  I would ask about network discovery but you said the other versions see it just fine.  Let us know if updating to 24.6.5 helps that issue.  Sorry about these problems, I hope we can help you solve them.

Hi Jamie, first of all, sorry for the very late reply!
I haven't had any free time to work on this, so apologies.

The MME change sadly doesn't help anything. I tried for about 30 minutes.
We use the Merging Audio Device (MAD), and the driver is: MAD Asio: 2.3.0.

No, we don't see anything in the Network Drives, it's completely empty. Which also means the Media Encoder doesn't recognize any of the footage used in our Sequences.

We did have an idea about the sluggishness of the playhead. We may be using wrong Sequence settings in combination with our Growing Files.
Here is a link to our Sequence Preset and a screenshot of the Properties of one of our Growing Files: https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1so0aFOgtcxBApszoIufviZXRA4BNd3Na?usp=sharing
I hope that's okay.

Thank you for your time.
