Premiere Pro lags and runs very slow, except for playback.

Tech Specs:

AMD Ryzen 3800x | 64GB (4x16 - DDR 3200) RAM | RTX 2060 Super | Windows 11 | Premiere Pro 23.2.0

Premiere installed on NVME

Media Cache stored on different internal NVME

Production/Project Files/Scratch Disks/Media stored on QNAP TVS-h1688X (8x16tb Seagate Iron Wolf Pro) | Configured in RAID 6 | Blackmagic Speed Test puts read/write speeds on average around 800 MB/s | Connects via 10gbe card on PC | All media is 4K Pro Res 422 HQ

I am working on editing a documentary with a director in another state and we are using productions to edit it (using the decentralized method as laid out in the PDF Adobe released recently).

The thing is that Premiere is lagging with everything but playback. When I playback the media it doesn't freeze or playback choppy at all. Playback is the only thing that is actually working without any problem right now. When I want to do anything outside of playback it lags terribly. If I want to right-click on something in the project folder it takes a few seconds before the menu appears. If I move the play head manually it waits a few seconds before it actually moves it. If I try editing using the pancake method it takes a few seconds before the clips show up in the second sequence. Even clicking on the help menu to see what exact version of Premiere Pro I was running caused it to freeze and say not respond for a few seconds before the help menu opened up. It seems like once every minute Premiere freezes for 3-20 seconds. This isn't doing complex things either.

The thing is that when I am editing projects on my PC outside of this one and just off of my internal SSD raids (which have about the same read/write speeds) it doesn't have this problem. It only happens when using productions.

Has anyone else had this problem and if so are there any solutions? I've gone through the list of things to make Premiere run faster (cleaning media cache, reinstalling, etc) but it hasn't done anything to fix the problem. But even then those problems tend to be focused on playback, which isn't the issue I am having. I know I just updated to the new 23.2.0 version of Premiere but this has been happening even before that update.

Other information that might be helpful:

The total production folder size is 122 MB with the project that all the footage is organized in being the largest project file at 42 MB

The total media being stored and accessed on the NAS is 40 TBs with 38 TBs of free space on the NAS

Two camera interviews synced as multicam clips

When things freeze up the resource monitor says that my memory is between 50-80% usage/32-52g GBs which is close to the max (54) I have reserved in my preferences (which by the way froze Premiere so much trying to check the first time that I had to do a force quit on it the first time). The only other apps that I have open are Google Chrome (with a Google Doc open up with notes and that is it), Qfinder Pro, and a time tracker.

Stacked Panel Groups = super interesting, we'll look into that.

Thanks for the further details!

Based on the description, this sounds like a general "timeline performance is laggy" issue we're chasing, and not something specific to Productions. We'll have a look...

Same issue here. Running Premiere 24.2.1 on an M1 Mac Studio with 64GB ram. Productions UI is painfully slow and becomes unresponsive when doing basic stuff like twirling down bins, changing view presets, and general navigation. Please help.

We're not seeing it here, and we've been looking...

[My team wrote and owns Productions]

Confirming: Just the Productions UI is painfully slow, the rest of PPro is great?

In which previous version of PPro was Productions most recently speedy and responsive, on the same system? Related: Other than updating PPro, what other changes has that system undergone? [OS updates, storage driver updates, GPU driver updates...???]

Is the slow Production on a local or network volume? If network; is it speedy, if you copy it locally?

If you open a stand-alone .prproj, stored next to the Production, does PPro operate on it responsively?

Thanks for the reply, Bruce. I actually JUST discovered the bug causing my horrible lag issue. Not sure if I can duplicate this in a standalone project but I'll let you know. I'm editing locally, btw. The issue was only apparent [for me] in the project window using a particular workspace layout. Everything else behaved normally.

The culprit, for me, stems from grouping the project window with other windows [such as the production window and effects window] and then selecting "Stacked Panel Group" in Panel Group Settings. I had no idea you could stack windows vertically like this [as opposed to the traditional horizontal layout] and thought, this is great, SO much more room in my workspace and the windows open + close as needed. However, with this configuration, scrolling a bin filled with hundreds of media clips [90% of which are only 1080 ProRes] the project window slowed to a crawl. It felt like Premiere was in quicksand. I thought it might be a drive issue. But all my HDs 7200 Enterprise drives and less than a year old.

I reverted back to the default Panel Group setting unitentionally but when I did the UI sprung back to life and was, once again, snappy af.

I hope this helps the OP and whoever else might be experiencing a similar issue.

I can confirm that the issue is the same in a standalone project, not just in a production. Something about stacking the project window really slows it's responsiveness.

FWIW: I have mine on a left panel with Effects Controls and sometimes Lumetri Scopes, and PP keeps opening the project panel, seemingly randomly, in the Stacked panels on the right with Lumetri, Essential Graphics, etc...
