Replace With Clip From Bin - Not respecting In/Out Points?

It seems like this normally works but lately when I use 'Replace With Clip > From Bin" with the new clip highlighted in the bin, it replaces it, but does not respect the In/Out points - it just places the new clip there at its start.

That is correct.

Easiest way is to use from Source Monitor, Match Frame.

If you have insufficient material, just drag the new clip to the timeline and watch the Program monitor for the correct frame.

I'm not totally sure what you mean by insufficient matrerial?

There is no shortage of ways of lining up footage manually, just wondering if the way this feature is functioning is how it is supposed to.

In other words, the scenario I'm in right now, is I'm just replacing Stock footage that has a watermark, with the newly purchased stock clips that are the exact same clip but clean.

So, in the scenario of a more complex edit, using "Replace With Clip" would be amazing if it repected the exact In/Out points that are already on the timeline.

Instead, I have to do it manually. (fwiw I'm just double clicking the clip on timeline, opening it in Source monitor, noting the In TC like 0:24 and matching it on new footage and dragging).

Wondering if I should do a feature request then. It's just weird because I swear this worked in the past. Maybe I'm wrong tho.

If the new clip duration is shorter than the clip in the timeline.

but if new clip is same length as clip in timeline.

Why not do a Replace Footage, that won't touch the in and outpoint on the timeline or drag from the SM

Yeah, replace footage is basically the same as making the footage offline and relinking, correct?

I would like to avoid this becaue some of the new clips are 4k whereas the previews were 1080, etc, might be a different codec, I just don't want any weird stuff happening.

But thank you so much for your input! I think I might suggest this as a feature request.

You can replace footage with anything you want.

....unless you are using a production, because the footage on your timeline isn't in your bin. Productions are really nice, but that is something they overlooked for sure. 

So the only way to replace something on the timeline from footage in a production is to drag the footage in, so you need a way to match the in/out points.

Thanks for responding. Yes, it is. To be clear - here's the problem I'm encountering:

I am trying to replace a clip and/or audio file on my sequence with one from the bin. They are the exact same duration and spec, but let's say, without a watermark, a new updated master, a slightly changed graphic, etc. But same file length and everything else.

Let's say I have the clip cut so that the second half of the clip is on the sequence. I would like to replace the clip with the new updated one, and not have to spend the time to find the exact In point on the new clip, drag in, etc. So that when I replace the clip, it seamlessly updates at the exact same In point of the new file.

You can do this in AE and I know i've done it in the past in premiere, when I use the "Replace with Clip > From Bin" function. But for the past few years, when I do this (yes with the exact same media length, specs, etc), it throws the new clip in there from the beginning of the file. So essentially it does not respect the In point that exists on the file in the sequence.

It works Mostly, if you add the new file to you bin first (or have a bin open if it's in a different prproj). Drag the file over top of the timeline clip you want to replace and hold Shift+Alt. 

That does Not work if the clip has a speed change though, which is a bug. But annoyingly, I tried reporting that. And adobe employee said yea, that seems like a bug. Then proceeded to tell me to spend a bunch of time doing steps to show them exactly how it is a bug. I don't have time for that, so for now you just have to change the time to 100%, replace it, then change it back.

What you are looking for is Replace clip from source monitor match frame

If the new clip is exactly the same length as the original clip, you can replace the clip in project panel.

Which is Alt+Shift drag on top. In After Effects it's just Alt drag on top. I love it when the software is for very similar purposes and has Slightly different shortcuts.

But also it currently has a bug, like I mentioned, that causes it to not work if it has a percentage speed change. It Does work fine if the speed change is done as a time remap with keyframes though. And in after effects it just works fine all the time.

Well replace with clip - match frame is not *exactly* the same as shift+alt dragging the clip over the timeline instance. 

(And I've seen them all behave inconsitently at times)

Replace from Source Monitor – Match Frame Method

• 1st selected timeline clip → syncs timeline playhead with playhead in Source Monitor
  
  Example:
  If the timeline playhead is 5 seconds into source clip 1, and the playhead in the Source Monitor is 20 seconds into source clip 2,
  then after replacement, the timeline playhead will be 20 seconds into the new clip.

Matches playhead-relative position between selected timeline clip and dragged bin item

Example:
If the timeline playhead is 5 seconds into source clip 1, the replacement will begin 5 seconds into source clip 2.
