Copy an install from one PC to another – video apps

New Here ,
Mar 31, 2023 Mar 31, 2023

I'm running a few workstations, and one of them is an old (but still very powerful) mac pro. Due to not being able to upgrade OS, I am running older Adobe creative cloud 2020 app versions on that machine, and therefore in order to pick up projects or collaborate with others on the other machines, they all need to be running those versions.

Only problem is, Adobe now no longer supports those versions, and so if a new machine enters the equation, where can I get the download of that version?

Adobe support say they can't give it to me because of policy, and their best advice is to upgrade my machine. Thanks but I don't think it's ridiculous to suggest that I should be able to keep using this machine that works amazing, just because you won't give me a download link to your program that I've paid plenty of money for and that works great on several machines. Actually I find it much less buggy than the newer versions of the software, even on brand new machines.

But anyway, I am faced with that issue right now where I want to collaborate on projects with a new machine, and I don't have Windows downloads of those versions to install on it. Specifically Premiere 2020 (v14) and After Effects 2020 (v17). I do have it installed on a different windows machine, though.

Anyone know of a way to successfully copy those apps from one PC to another?

1. you can install the latest and 1 version prior versions using the cc desktop app. you must have a subscription because previous versions are not available with trials. other versions are revealed after clicking file preferences>apps>tick show older apps (at panel bottom).

2. for versions cc 2019 and older, use prodesign tools.com*.

3. for versions newer than cc 2019 but older than one previous version, contact adobe support for links.**

* most (but not all) adobe download links are available from prodesigntools.com. https://prodesigntools.com/adobe-direct-download-links.html

follow the directions (esp, step 1)

save the install file. it may not remain online.

** there are 3 ways to contact adobe; chat, phone and twitter:

chat:
use a browser that allows popups and cookies, and click here, https://helpx.adobe.com/contact.html?rghtup=autoOpen
in the chat field (lower right), type AGENT
be patient, it can take quite a while to reach a human.

tweet @AdobeCare

p.s. if you're contacted by anyone (via email or private message), it's much more likely to be a scammer than an adobe representative. ie, double check for an employee badge if contacted in the forums and look for an adobe.com domain in the email address if you click reply to an email. then check again and be very suspicious. any other method of contacting (or offering to contact you) is almost certainly a scam,

Hi @robviscardis CC2020 direct download links are now only available from Adobe Support.

They should give you direct download links without issue if you explain that you cannot upgrade your OS. What you've described is concerning as that is not what they should be doing.

Follow the second part of @kglad 's post to reach a person.

Migrating the software between machines never works out well.

Hey guys, thanks for the responses. But as I said in my original post, I have reached out to Adobe support, only to be refused that version. I have attempted this multiple times recently and they've all given me the reason that they can't because of some internal policy. I imagine it has something to do with licensing... for the specific version of 2020. A couple years ago maybe I was given links to this version no problem, but recently, they refuse.

I think prodesigntools info is out of date on this issue.  I agree that it is concerning. I am now just trying to find a workaround. If anyone had an old download for Premiere and After effects 2020 lying around for windows that'd be amazing. I've got mac ones.

Hi @robviscardis I'll make some contacts. We haven't been informed of any policy changes regarding older versions. I or someone from Adobe will follow up.

Hi @Kevin Stohlmeyer @robviscardis

As per the enterprise support policy, the N and N-1  version will be available for the end-users.

N = Latest

Here is the supporting article: https://helpx.adobe.com/support/programs/cc-support-policy.html#cce

I did some research and found that After Effects version 17.7.1 can be packaged from the Adobe admin console (if you have the enterprise license) for the Mac Intel device.
Please help me with the OS version you are using so that I could find the supporting Premiere Pro version.

Hi there,

Okay, so that's a confirmation that 2020 is unavailable, then. I do not have an enterprise license so your suggestion is not helpful to me, and either way, I'm looking for a Windows version.

This is very dissapointing for any users of older machines that can't upgrade OS. Why make a version of your software that works perfectly fine obsolete?

LATEST

So, let's be clear, incase there's any confusion. I'm referring to Adobe Premiere Pro and After Effects here:

  • The current version, 2023 (N) = available for download
  • Previous version, 2022 (N-1) = available for download
  • Two versions ago, 2021 = contact support for download links
  • Three versions ago, 2020 = Not available for download – based on being denied by Adobe support after requesting downloads, and subsequent response from Adobe employee in this thread.
  • Versions 2019 and earlier = available for download at prodesigntools.com

Okay, hopefully that clears up this thread, and makes it clear to everyone that the specific 2020 versions of these programs are no longer available to download for whatever reason. I'd love to see that resolved, or if anyone has their own download link handy in the meantime of AE 2020 for windows, that'd be swell.
