Fuji X-T4 h.265/HEVC files very laggy in in Premiere 22.0.0 (Build 169) for Apple Silicon

First time editing video on my new Macbook Pro M1 Max. 

Any of the h.265 video's I import into my project then drag into the source monitor play in a very very laggy fashion. The video just freezes, but the audio can continue. 

No issues with h.264 videos, and it obviously works if I convert the h.265 into apple prores - but i really don't want to have to do that for all my clips. 

 

Any idea's if this is a priority fix?

 

System info:
Apple Macbook Pro 14 inch

M1 Max 10 core

32 core GPU

64 GB ram

MacOS Monterey 12.0.1

 

Will try on my windows PC also - but apparently a common problem across the board since early Nov and the Beta testing. A lot of X-T4 users out there.

yes I have been using the beta version since the day i posted this.
It's much better playback actually, then there are other bugs like it takes forever to save the project or it often crashes but i really hope that this version will be released as soon as possible and that it will improve.

Cross posted here- On the M1 Max 22.3.0 Beta performs better than the non beta version in playing back HEVC, but it is still so choppy that it's not functional to use as an editor for this type of footage. Using J,K,L transport control fails miserably and some footage just doesn't play back at all. This is after a cache clean and waiting for my file to update media (from 2021 to 2022 beta). Point being, not a solution (for XT3 footage, at least). Sticking to 2021 for now.

    Premiere 2021 works well with h265 10bit Fujifilm x-t4 videos but Pr2022 sucks. Waiting for an update but there is nothing.

    Hi everyone,

     

    We have reported this issue to our product team & we will try our best to get it addressed as soon as possible. For the time being, you may either transcode the files to an edit-friendly codec like ProRes 422 or use the previous version of Premiere Pro (v15.4.1).

      After weeks of trying, still unable to edit h.265 footage in Premiere (22.1.2).  Your suggestion to use previous version 15.4.1 doesnt work - it says I'm unable to open projects in a previous version.  And transcoding using media encoder fails.  Very frustrating.

      h265 if a bear of a format, heavily compressed to get high quality with small file sizes.  I'd try transoding to prores 422 or prores 422hq.    Rachel, what format are your proxies?  Any all iframe format like any of the prores formats will probably play much better..  You can also downrez your proxy files to 1080 which will also probably help.

      Transcoding the footage to ProRes makes it very smooth. But the whole problem is trying to avoid doing that since the M1 Pro/Max has an engine dedicated to decoding these HEVC/H.265 files. The fact that I can edit perfectly smooth with no transcoding in FCP proves this.

      am I surprised that apple's app does a better job handling the video format of the iphone...  no.  FCPX is a very different beast than premiere and we're in very early days with the M1 Pro/Max chip...   and I'm guessing Apple had access to how the chips perform etc way before Adobe did...  I'm sure Adobe's working on this, but probably a good idea to either transcode to an easier to digest format or work in FCPX.   BWDIK...

      Thanks for the prompt reply. 

      No they are 4:2:0 straight from camera, not 4:2:2, but I do beleive it's 10bit.

      This is from the properties panel in Premiere Pro:
