I'd like to export a 1080p sequence with Apple ProRess 422 footage to a space-saving format but still keep good amount of information/quality in the file.
I see I can export HVEC (H.265) from Media Encoder but the exported file has a 420 color space. How can I make it 422?

Hey Martin,
Could you try Prores 422 LT and see if that codec does the job? It takes less space than Prores 422 and has 422 chroma subsampling. Let us know.

Prores 422 LT works but I have so much media that I was hoping to save more space and preserve quality with HEVC (H.265).
Is that possible?

You might play with the profile & levels settings for the H.265 settings under "more ... ".
Try perhaps the next profile past Main, or a 5.x or higher profile. Maybe clear to a 6 level profile.

Thank you Neil, for some reason it doesn't give me a 422 file.
I have the latest version of Premiere and Media Encoder, I wonder if it's something they have to enable/fix.
If Apple Proress 422 LT is too large for this case, any idea what would be the next space-saving codec/format that will preserve a good quality?

Is your source footage 4:2:2? It´s good to know that if you have 4:2:0 footage you wont gain anything by export it to 4:2:2 since it wont be magically better.
I don´t think Adobe products can export a 4:2:2 H.265 file since the Profile tops out at Main 10 and not Main 10 4:2:2 that is required.
I can get it in TMPGEnc Mastering Works 7:

I can also get a 422 HEVC file from ShutterEncoder, a free encoding utility that is actually a decent UI front-end for using the open-source ffmpeg encoding software.
You have to go into the Advanced settings on the right side to get the 'force 422' option. Interesting that Premiere still sees that result as 420, but MediaInfo shows it's actually 422.
So you could export a ProRes 422 file, then drag/drop it into S-E, and export an HEVC 422 file from that. Then dump the ProRes if you want.

Averdahl, yes, my source footage is 4:2:2.
You're correct, I only see "Main" and "Main 10" in the settings.
