Over Exposed Footage!

Community Beginner ,
Nov 03, 2021 Nov 03, 2021

So i have a video edited and needing to go out today, but Premiere Pro's new V22 update is now making it impossible for my to be easily colour corrected! When I edit the video I have it exactly how I want it to look, however when I go to export it. it is unbelievably over exposed. So much so that it is impossible to see how this could ever be a help, I will attach 2 different pics, the first one is Post-Render and the next one is Pre-Render.

I am fairly new to premiere pro, and I desperately need help as this video needs to go out for my company today!

that video won't work.. sorry. try checking the overlay tab when exporting. make sure there's no lut or added color correction. also, what preset are you rendering as? i won't be able to respond till later today so just wait till someone else responds if that doesn't work

Its not the pre render that's the issue. the Issue is that once it has exported it automatically goes ridiculously over exposed, no matter what software I use to watch it on.

yeah thats why the video i attached was wrong. usually if something happens only after export i find it's because of a setting in render settings

See what Peru Bob or Ann attached, it has to do with color override.

I was helping someone else with this the other day, I can't believe I forgot =P

If you import the exported file into Premiere Pro, does that exported file still look overexposed on the timeline in the Program Monitor?

Yes, this is what I see...it is over exposed on the timeline on the export settings and over exposed after export however, on the editing timeline the video looks normal and colours are fine. I have not added a LUT on the export settings or anything like that. Please help.

Thank you

I am having the same issue and yes, when I open a new project with the previously exported file - it looks very overexposed/saturated.

So what is the color space of the clip? Did you check that?

In the project panel, right-click/Properties. If it's HLG, for instance, then you would need to do basic color management in Pr2022 and go to the Modify/Interpret Footage dialog setting the Override option to Rec.709.

Hi Neil,

Yes, I just checked and it indicates "Color Space: Rec. 2100 HLG"

I have applied a lut and auto colour corrections to the adjustment layer.

When I select the sequence in the project panel to modify I am unable to interpret the footage.

Thanks,

Madison

If you want to interpret footage you need to select a video file not a sequence.

Hi Ann,

Thank you. I have selected all the clips and intrepreted them. Will the sequence automatically be updated then or do I need to re-create the sequence?

Don't count on anything updated automatically: always check.

The sequence is nothing more than a bunch of clips with cuts and effects applied to them. The way color of clips is interpreted is not a part of the sequence, but the footage.

better roll back to version of PPro that actually worked for your shoots and exports.

if you hurry you can get it out today for your company.

good luck

: )

you can then become a mystery detective to solve the discrepency in color between the editing program versions and waste your life on that mission.

I think the others who have replied to this thread have concluded the issue has to do with color override. You don't need to go to the work of setting up your old version again....

Actually to be honest nothing really helped, (not through any of your faults, I appreciate you guys trying) it was just an impossible glitch or bug, or whatever it is that just made my life miserable for 3 hours straight! :') However what I managed to do is is composite it in linear colour (something I was told to turn off in one of the videos I watched about solving the issue(I already had it off)) and just colour correcting it again. it didn't get to the ideal look I once wanted it. but to be honest it just got to a point where as long as I can make the colours somewhat bright, and somewhat accurate, i didn't care anymore lol. I just posted it. it didn't turn out half bad but as I'm sure we all know, everytime I watch this video back all I can think of is how much I wanted to change on it!

Here's how it turned out: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5YIiC-ORAf8&t=1s

Yeah, it made the footage exposure alot more accurate to the post export exposure. It worked well for me, I'm just hoping my next project won't have this problem 🙂

Just be aware that the new color managment settings need to be checked if there's any issue of improper CM going on. In the Clip properties as well as sequence settings.

New options for when needed, but it also means new possibilities for problems.

i watched the video and it doesn't look too bad... i can definitely see that it's over exposed but if its a one time thing thing then i think its okay. hope you dont have to deal with this again, and do what Neil says 🙂

As noted by others, there are new color management options in Premiere as of the 2022 version.

In the project panel, the clips in a bin have properties via Modify/Interpret ... check there for clip-based CM.

Then the Sequence settings dialog now has CM settings ...

The Scopes panel has CM settings found by right-clicking ...

And exporting has different options that you need to check the manual for anymore.
