Playhead not moving with recent update

Explorer ,
Jun 21, 2024 Jun 21, 2024

After the recent update of Premiere Pro, the playhead is not moving while playing on the timeline. Is there an option that turns this on and off? I cannot find anything in preferences.

Update. Figured out how to fix after checking another work station, updated Premiere Pro there and noticed the playhead was moving.

After a reinstall did not work on the main, I basically decided to 'cleared the media cache files' and 'reset the workspace layout' (after watching a video) under Windows menu heading, and now the playhead works and displays as normal. So its still a bug, but a reasonably fixable bug.

I played around a bit more on 24.5, and still can't get it to happen. I saw an error before when opening the Essential Graphics, that it took about 25 seconds. I was certain it has to do with Libraries.

FWIW: In beta right now, the Essential Graphics panel is no more, and now we have Graphics Templates which is basically the Browse part of EG, and the Edit part now takes place in the new Properties panel.

Yep this is 100% correct,  Essential Graphics is open, the playhead stops, I can click on Edit on the Essential Graphics tab and playhead starts.   Such fancy software, that is still full of new bugs too, very interesting....

Thank you so much. I've been dealing with this all morning today after finally updating Premiere Pro. I tried all the other suggestions mentioned, but it was closing the Essential Graphics panel that fixed it for me. I never would have guessed it. Thanks again.

Just wanted to pipe in that this immediately fixed the non-moving playback bar for me as well. Close the 'Essential Graphics' tab if you have it open.

I read your comment and was like, "There's no way that fixes it." I clicked over to "Edit" and the playhead started moving. I literally grabbed the sides of my head and was like, "WHAT!!!?!"

I also noticed that, if you have other tabs open in the same window as your Essential Graphics, you can just click over to another tab and that works as well. It seems as though, if you have the Browse part of Essential Graphics opened, the playhead doesn't move but, if you click over to Edit or otherwise hide the Browse part, it starts working again. For instance, I have the Effect Controls tab in the same window as Essential Graphics and I just clicked over to Effect Controls and it also worked to make the playhead start moving again.

That's such a silly thing to have interfering with each other.

I've found an other fix, in your media pool, click on the 3 III after the name of your project, and enable preview area, and it works fine

I also just had this problem appear for no reason.  But yes, if I close the Essential Graphics panel, things are back to normal.  Ack!!

I have the same issue, and while I can temporarily fix it clearing the unused media cache, resetting workspace layouts (wiping out my custom layouts entirely, thanks Adobe) and then working, the issue returns the next time I open the project.

As indicated below, the issue is directly related to the Essential Graphics panel. Close the panel or make sure it is not visible and the playhead will move during playback normally.

@Colossus848 I thought in this thread the video does play, it's just the playhead doesn't move while that's happening. "it doesn't play on it's own, the audio pays just not the video", that sounds like a differerent problem?

You should probably start a new thread with "Bug" as the type.

Go here: Premiere Bug Report

Here's what they are looking for: How do I write a bug report?

Indeed, in version 24.5 the playhead is not moving if the Essential Graphics panel is open. This is an rather annoying bug. When is Adobe issuing a new update that solves this bug? Today or tomorrow?

Amazed this was first reported in June and its now September and no fix! I have the same issue whats weird on my issue is i have 2 custom work sapces one for dual monitor one for single monitor.

The single monitor workspace has essential graphics open and play head works fine

The dual monitor work space has essential graphics open on the second monitor and the play head sticks during play back but as per everyone else if i close the essential graphics panel the play head works fine. WTF is that all about?

I dont want to keep closing esential graphics what the point in that.

Going by Adobe's track record, your earliest expected remedy for any given bug is about 10 years from now. And no, I'm not joking. I've followed up on threads from 2014 reporting bugs that are still very much present to this day.

But hey, a new feature 1% of their userbase will use just came out!

I'm working in Premiere 25.0.0 and I've tried everything I've seen in this thread and my playhead still doesn't move when I press the right or left arrow keys. I don't even know how to open the Essential Graphics panel to begin with. I cleared all the media cache.

When I press the left or right key, the playhead will move a tiny bit but then not any more despite press the keys more. The blue numbers in the top left corner of the timeline panel go up or down as I press right or left... but the playhead doesn't move.

I don't know how the heck else to fix this. Anyone have any ideas? 🙂

The easiest way is (if you have a windows and nvidia computer) to update your gpu driver to NVidia Studio in Geforce Experience or in the new Nvidia app. It solved all my big Premiere pro problems.
