Proxies & replace with after effects composition in Premiere pro 2017

Hi.

When working with proxies in Premiere pro cc 2017 and then replacing a clip with a after effects comp, does after effects pull in the full resolution clip or the proxy file?

Thanks

/Per ☺

According to  all statements from official Adobe sources and everything I've seen here or tested, the ONLY thing the ingestion proxy media is used for is playback within PrPro. They are never used for exporting or any other purpose.

As far as I can tell that does include comps also. Of course, it eould take what, a minute to test?

Thanks.

I was hoping that was the case.

And yes, it would take a minute to test, but since I'm on the road with a laptop with no After effects installed, I figured that I could just ask the community 🙂

Sorry took so long to respond ... computer issues, what a joy. Ah well.

I'd guess anyone from Jutland would rather be on the road ... or a boat ... Norway is so much  better, not so flat!

I know about being out & about while trying to puzzle out workflow. My brain does that all the time. 24/7 and how annoying it is when it happens during the night when I'm trying to sleep!

I have footage with proxies in Premiere.  I bring that footage into After Effects via the Dynamic Link feature.  When I toggle the proxies in PP, AE re-renders the frame and there is a noticeable difference in quality.

Depending on the quality of the original and proxy media, I can at times see a difference on the screen in PrPro, the proxies may be a bit fuzzier, less sharp, whatever. So I'm not noticing anything I wouldn't expect, just looking at these.

I know this is an old post, however I found it, so others may too.

Now, what seems to happen is this.  Once you do replace with AE comp, the proxy setting in PP does nothing, as it's not using that, it's using the comp, which makes sense.

AE uses the full original file, even if the proxy was on in PP.

However, what's nice, is that AE keeps the link to the proxy file, so you don't need to re-proxy in AE.

But, it doesn't have it on by default.  If you toggle it on next to the file name, you see the change in AE, which becomes faster, and also you then see the change in PP.

So in summary, if it's in PP, it's controlled there, if it's an AE comp, the proxy is controlled in AE.  Makes sense!

One final thing to note, if you leave the proxy on in AE, and render out in PP, it will use the proxy, not the original.

But in PP, if you're using proxy, (not with an AE comp), and you render, it uses the original file.

AKTUELL

The Premiere Pro Proxy workflow is not currently supported with After Effects Proxy functionality, so a number of oddities may occur.

There is a mention of this under the Known issues & tips section at Adobe Premiere Pro Help | Ingest and Proxy Workflow in Adobe Premiere Pro

• The Proxy workflow is not supported for interchange options such as Project Manager, Render and Replace, AAF, Final Cut Pro XML, EDL, OMF, and so on. You lose Proxy attachment for these functions. After Effects and Audition interoperability functions are also not currently supported with the Proxy workflow.

Feel free to add a request for full support and interoperability at Premiere Pro: Hot (5503 ideas) – Adobe video & audio apps
