"Jittery" Crossfades Exporting in 4k H.264 in Premiere Pro CC 22?

Hey all, I wanted to share an issue I've had exporting 4k footage on my Windows 10 PC, namely in the H.264 file format.

SAMPLE FOOTAGE: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1WXUwDfdz_K1ZF_MdOFXYSs2-cPuuW2bw/view?usp=sharing

FAQ:

Are you turning off any and all hardware acceleration settings?

Yes. Any and all "GPU/CPU Acceleration" options have been turned off.

What are you editing?

24 FPS Canon 4k c-log footage from a Mark IV, although this error tends to occur anytime I export 4k on my rig.

Are the exports choppy in H.264 when you export at 1080?

No, all 2k exports and codecs that I've tested are smooth.

What about other codecs?

4k Quicktime has the same issue, but I've found that other 4k Codecs (like uncompressed AVI) work just fine. However, it's imperative to my workflow that I export in H.264 (MP4)

Do these issues appear during playback in Premiere?

No, only after the file has been exported.

Do these issues persist when the exported file is played back on other computers or in other media players?

Yes - the dropped frames are in the video itself and are not a product of the device/software it's being played on.

Any other unique details?

When I drag and drop the footage into the sequence and ask the Adobe software to match the sequence settings to the clip settings, it turns the sequence (and subsequent output when I use "match sequence settings" in my export) into a 2k 1920x1012 file, which isn't even scaled properly due to the missing pixels on the height value. This export, since it's 2k, doesn't have any frame stuttering.

What processor and GPU do you have on your rig?

Processor: Intel Core i7 6700 CPU @ 3.40GHz 3.41GHz

GPU: GTX 1060 3GB

Any and all help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I am having the SAME issue and been dealing with for a few weeks now. And can't find a solution. I have deleted all cache files, I've tried exporting smaller portions, everything that was suggested by others and still have random transitions that flicker. They are smooth in Premiere but once I export, they are showing in random places each time. I will go back and fix one and re-export and a new one pops up. Please help!

How about trying another effect, like a plain ol' wipe or slide, see if it's the footage?

This looks like an issue with the media cahce/media cache database. Once cleared exports should look fine.

Deleted all media cache files from the system, and the H.264 export still came out jittery on the crossfades. Any other solutions?

Did you delete the Media Cache Database as well? It´s important to delete the Media Cache and the Media Cache Database. When done, launch Premiere Pro and open the project and let Premiere Pro create the needed files until you try to export. (Conforming/generate peak files)

Questions:

  1. Have you tried to export using the settings in the image below? How did it look?

  2. If you create a new project and import two clips and place a transition between them, do you get jittery crossfades now as well?

  3. Does the same thing happen if you skip dragging and dropping the footage to create a new sequence? IOW, if you manually create a sequence based on the clip properties, frame size/frame rate/pixel aspect ratio, does it happen now as well?

  4. Can you share two 24 FPS Canon 4k c-log footage from a Mark IV sample clips so i can test it? Maybe even a project file of a project that can export with those two clips that have jittery transitions? Send me a PM if you don´t want´to share it publically.

  5.  Which version of Premiere Pro do you use, Version 22.2.0, or?

FAQ:

Is that "SAMPLE FOOTAGE:" footage or an export?

I didn't see any dropped frames, the disolves don't look very good.

It's an export. Sorry if my language was confusing - the "dropped frames" are referring to the fact that the cross dissolve seems to clip back and forth between the two clips rather than smoothly fading. That's my primary issue with the exports.

Thanks!

Try unchecking Composite in linear color in the sequence settings.
